When he was first signed as manager I was disappointed. I thought he was the cheap option which, to be fair, he was. i thought it was an indication of lack of ambition from our chairman and I suspected we were in danger of boring the supporters to Meadowhall, lowering the gate revenue and entering into a vicious circle of decline.
Anyway he batted away and before long we were showing signs of promise. Gelling and playing entertaining, exciting, effective football. Suddenly the board was alive with cries of "Best performance in years!" We were "play off hopefuls," "a force to be reckoned with."
So where's all that gone? Now we're back to "baffling team selections" and "ridiculous substitutions." Ok, the loan players have gone back but the criticism seems to suggest the manager isn't playing the hand he's left with properly. So did Simon have a purple patch? Is he up to the job? Should we be doing better with the players we have? What does his faith in Odejayi tell us?
Will the real Simon Davey please stand up?

Best spell last season was when he played a solid 4-4-2 with a settled side. Same again this.
He lost quality players but if it hasn't dawned on him yet that trying to be smart with formations and 'gameplans' doesn't cut it. he wants to stop trying to be clever and stick to what he knows and what works.

I wish Tha'd Gioer and just **** off.........chuff ayup mucker how are you.... I must agree its a worry our current plight. its midfieldin my opinion where the key lies, we do not seem to command there at all lately.
Excellent post ... and welcome relief from the rest of the detritus on the BBS (to which I briefly contributed).
I've been having exactly the same thoughts. Early part of the season was exciting stuff, every game could have gone either way, but we showed real promise and we appeared to have the kernel of a decent team. I always thought play-offs might be a step too far, but after Watford I was convinced we were good enough to remain mid table. In my view Nyatanga, Souza, Howard, JCR, De Silvaand later Macken were the real stars. Yes they all had poor games, but overall they all brought something to the team, and in my view Macken and De Silva were the best additions of the lot because they both had something special. For the first time in ages we had someone strong enough in Macken to hold up the ball and lay it off for others. In De Silva, we had someone who could create and start attacks from midfield, by passing, not hoofing aimlessly, and I think Howard benefitted from having De Silva alongside as it gave him confidence to do his thing. Also I love JCR but then I love old fashioned wingers.
Now with Macken, DeSilva and Nyatanga gone, we have had the spine ripped out of the team but I don't understand why we suddenly revert to 4-5-1 diamond formations with inexperienced strikers up front. I would hope we are trying our hardest to get one or all three of those players back, but in the meantime I would like to see us revert to 4-4-2 and perhaps give Christensen a chance (unless he does have an attitide problem of course). Like you, I am worried about Davey's gameplan. We've had to work hard to get here, let's not waste it.

tha as bad as 'im thee have to agree with the spinal cord now broken. I do not think Nyatanga will be allowed back.but I think Foster can grow to hold that slot..I have to point to the mid field, its there where I believe our main problems are.
Spine of the team has gone back home and the players who stepped up to the plate (apart from Foster, who's repositioning made right back a cause for concern) have not been up to the job. Teams around us have shown they are able to spend money (they may not be able to afford it, however) and large amounts of it in order to improve things. The luck we had in some early games has now turned into bad luck. Sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you.
Simon Davey and Shep are still learning the trade............and they have had some hard lessons to learn this winter e.g. Werling and all the loan signings going back Hopefully we will stay up this season and push on again next season with lessons from this season well and truely learned
simon davey and shep have only just this month learned that loan signings go back? god help us if that's the case.
Its Da Silva we're missing, and here's why
And before he emails me, these views werea mate's but I wholeheartedly agree...
In Da Silva, we had a player who knewhe was one of the best on the park, certainly in a red shirt. BUT, what he also has is discipline.
If you watch Howard, he also knows he's good, but he's the type who'll try and take on that extra man, or have a shot himself, because in his mind, the ones around him aren't as good as him, so he thinks he might as well have a crack himself.Same instinct that we all had when laiking in the school field- "I'm not passing to that idiot, he's sh*t".
Da Silva must think the same half the time, but he has the discipline to do his job. If he sees that he needs to sit backdefend, or pass, or whatever, he does it.
Thats what Simon's missing. I agree that some of his decisionshave beenpoor, but you can get away with it a lot more when you've got a Da Silva. Without one Simon's record will continue to be under threat, unless he finds a way to get them to play as a team better than they are at the moment.
