well some of you may read it,that have never been down a coal mine dont know if that is a good thing, or nnot so good,it was good for me it would be about 1944 when i was a 16 year old PONY driver taking empty tubs to the coal face this time as approached the coal face there was no noise, power cut i saw, several of the older lads, stood around one man on hids Knees(little did i know it was for me) this lad was trying to hit a spot chalked dot,on a piece of wood called a chock he kept missing, and as i got nearer he made a terrible miss, the others laughed so did i, (just what they wanted,i fell for it) ok clever bugger BOB,see if tha can do it then, so i gets hold of the pick owd on they shouted, not so fast, take off the helmet, and close ur eyes, so i took off my helmet ,laid it down closed my EYES(i can hit this with my eyes shut,i will show em) so i let go with the pick opened my eyes to find the pick firmlly embedded in my Helmet and the chap who did it still alive he lives at worsboro bridge if you want his phone number i will give it to you Now lets go to Korea i was a truck driver, in the R,E,s i used to a rail head and collect 12x12 timber to be made into Bunkers this day ,the train was late, i was wondering around, doing nowt, when i spotted a pick suddenly i remembered that day at Pilley now i had a gang of Korean labourers who i took did all the graft, but were strong inquisitive men they also were doing nowt i made a circle in the ground put a dot in the centre took of my hat and tried to hit it they spotted me,and it was not long before they came over i could not hit the centre and there is always one,(yes) hey Johnny(thats what they called us(johnny) me have a go,ok i said but take of your hat, close your eyes(easy in pigeon english so as he was ready to strike i put his hat on the dot,and said shush to his mates then wham, you should have seen his face when he opened his eyes now you would think it ended there but no it was some time later,a simular reason all quiet when i spotted the koreans and lo and behold there was a new member of the team and they did it on HIM if that trick is still being played tell em it came from pilley pit
Like it Bob I know a few of the older end that worked at Pilley Pit. I used to play the Organ at Pilley Working Mens Club and Reading Room. Apparently the club had one of the finest book libraries in Yorkshire at one time.
