On BBC 1 reviewing the newspapers. Apparently he'll be at Oakwell this afternoon. I knew him vaguely at school (Wath Grammar same year as me).
Sorry he is just one person I don't get. Find his poems embarrassing but clearly many love them. That isn't a reflection of him, rather his work.
Comes across as a ball bag on TV, spoke to him on a bus a few years ago he's as big a tarn fan as thy'll find and a lot quieter than tha would think
Just a bloke who's found a way to channel his talent successfully - you may not like it but he has found an audience and good luck to him. He always champions what is good about Barnsley and that's ok by me.
Ian is a brilliant bloke lives near me mam and dad catches bus into tarn with my brother every honme game. Straight forward and down to earth. When I ran a Barnsley fanzine he contributed regularly and willingly when I'm sure he had better things to do.
He's a hero for me. The roll call of famous Barnsleyites almost entirely consists of sportsmen, it's good that we can have someone erudite to look up to as well. A Barnsley accent on a Radio 3 programme about poetry? B'art time.
Top bloke, who's quite pally with my dad. Saw him do a poetry reading many moons ago with his then partner Martin Whiley, who very sadly passed away just a few months later. I was only about 14 at the time and thought they were absolutely brilliant.
comes across as quite genuine does Ian....much better than fekking parky or fekking dickie bird for that matter. his poetry is a bit cr.ap but that adds to the charm. thereev approves of Ian M. so I know this helps you all.
I've known Ian since we were 12 years old. Went through school with him, was always a bit of a nutter... but REALLY clever in English (language and literature). The main thing is.... he, like me, loves jazz. For the rest of you he is Barnsley (and Darfield) through and through.
Also likes Captain Beefheart as quoted on desert island discs http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/desert-island-discs/castaway/89df5dc8
Agree with most on this thread, done well for himself. The town is too quick to have a go at anybody who makes anything of themselves.
