Ice on pavements

    Someone told me yesterday that you should never clear the snow off the pavement in front of your house because if you do not do it perfectly and someone slips then they can sue you for not doing it right. Whereas if you do nothing then they can't sue you as snowfall is a natural phenomenon. What is the world coming to. If you try and do a neighbourly task like this you leave yourself liable, and thus you do nothing leaving passers by a greater chance of having an accident. This has got to be wrong,

    I don't know how true that is but in America if you don't clear it you can be fined and they seem to be more H&S conscious than us.

    Well I cleared next doors ice from the pavement in front of their gate about 2 hours ago coincidentally and I'm not putting it fecking back!

    It will have definitely happened that someone in a meeting at some dodgy law firm today will have brought up the possibility of claiming from your neighbour or the council after an ice related fall - thankfully we aren't there yet, but it can't be far off, maybe this (completely natural) cycle of global warming will save us from this.

    Completely natural? Are you sure about that? There's no doubt that the earths temperature is cyclical but the process is being sped up by human activity

    No it's not true, certainly now anyway. The Govt introduced the Snow Code in 2010... which means you're now OK, having said that they did say in 2004 you could be sued.

    Just a small observation......I spend a lot of time in Germany, all through the year/seasons.

    Never do I see ice on the pavements, which suggests to me that they have either (a) a super de-icer that we dont have or (b) they have more efficient and willing local Councils that do a good job.

    I'm going with (b).

    In Germany you have to clear snow by law, from the pathway along the perimeter of your land and also a path for the postman to deliver letters. This applies even if you are away on holiday, or if (like me) you actually live in Dodworth! It's mental. I've seen people frantically shovelling snow in a raging blizzard, even though it's accumulating faster than they can clear it.

    Personally, I think it's easier to walk on snow, rather than on an icy path which has been partially cleared. I prefer to just leave it and let nature take its course.
