I was a Millwall fan. Our result will get the headlines because we are already sat with a -4 goal difference. I've got mates texting me with the 'same old Barnsley' line because they just see the result. What I saw yesterday was an opposition who will give a lot of teams a problem this year. They have some top level players, money to spend and a very good manager proven at this level. Our players, generally, are not as good as theirs. It would be odd if they were, given that they've just had eight seasons in the Premiership. I haven't looked through the many post match posts from yesterday, so apologies for any repetition, but we could see that Wigan's midfield was superior to ours. Watson had so much time on the ball and was picking out Maloney with ease. Would it have beenthat different with Etuhu and / or Digby? I'm not so sure. I expected us to lose and we did. I would be far more concerned if we had just lost at home to Yeovil Town like Millwall did.
I thought the management team were a bit naive yesterday with the formation. Not sure the players selected were wrong but the way we set up invited Wigan onto us and gave us nothing going forward which isn't a good combination.
From about the fifth minute yesterday everyone one of us who sit together in the Ponty were saying that Watson was pulling all the strings and we had to stick a man on him or he would do some damage. We didn't and we saw the result. Basics going wrong cost us but they were a very good side and we will play better so I am not too worried at this point.
Lining up 4-4-2 with Kennedy and Golbourne down the left could have been in anticipation of Wigan lining up 4-4-2 with Callum McManaman down the right.
As soon as it was announced he wasn't playing half an hour before the start we could have changed it.
