Then I'll be a lipsticked covered penguin. We have better strikers at the club in Iain Hume (when fit), Daniel Bogdanovic and John Macken. If we do intend on signing another striker, then I'd rather we put a little thought into the matter, and bring someone in with some quality and promise. There are plenty out there. I've heard Sam Vokes' name being banded about. Will Hoskins etc etc. I think signin Andy Gray, would be a step back in our progression. Just my opinion.
But, we could do with a big fella up front. Someone to knock the defenders about, win headers and give us options. Hume doesn't do that. Boggy doesn't do that. Macken can do that, but it's not really his game. Apparently KO can do it, but rarely does.
Why? He's young, he's pacy, he's big and he can score. £300,000 was the price touted. Half the price. You've also got to think of the sell on value. Andy Gray is 31. 2 year contract would make him 33. Who's going to want to buy a 33 year old, injury prone player? Hmmm?
He'd spend more time in the cells than on the pitch.......... but I have to agree with Poet, Gray is a dear purchase at £600k, but, good goalscoring target men are at a premium, if he does come and nets 15+ then that money would seem a snip, its not an exact science choosing player personnel, Southampton's £1mil punt on Lambert is testament to a market gone daft.
RE: He'd spend more time in the cells than on the pitch.......... I agree, it does seem quite a bit for his age, but how many times have we gone on about buying 'proven Championship players'. We get close to signing one, and fans start to moan we're paying too much. In relation to Will Hoskins.. Rotherham had a striker a year or two before him, scored a similar amount of goals in League One and left the club after six months for the Championship. Like Hoskins, he failed to deliver in the Championship. Deon Burton. At the end of the day, we have no impact on who Davey signs so why bother.
Yes I do, just as think we paid too much for Hume....... but football has gone crazy, can't get my head round how a valuation is made, take for instance the Howard affair, one minute we think he's worth at least 2mil, his performances seemed to warrant that and then he's sold for £500k, I suppose if Lambert fires the Saints back into the Championship its money well spent, it all seems cockeyed to say the least, I read with interest today that Hull City are splashing the cash on players and giving them 4 year contracts, all well and good if Premiership status is maintained for the full term, but, if they go down, well, the players don't get hurt, just the club and supporters, And don't get me started on Man City. (
SD said he is looking for a targetman...& GRAY fits the bill! big, strong experienced & can score Macken has been playing in the role but doesn't have physical presence i.e. he's not tall enough other strikers at the club are either grafters, have pace or finishers........ IMO last season we had players who could finish in the squad but lacked ariel and physical presence up front....... in fact I don't think any of our forwards scored a goal from a header!! and chances were restricted as their was no target man to either hold the ball up or flick on. So Vokes, Hoskins etc could all come, but if no targetman in the squad opportunities may be restricted and they may be forced to play an unfamilair role....... or work twice as hard to create chances!
