We had this thread in April last year...

At this time of year, given the first warm weather, it will be a queen just come out of hibernation. The queens lay the eggs after making a small, cone-shaped nest. When they buzz round your loft they are looking for nesting material - like flaking wood etc. They lay a few eggs and those hatch quickly into the first workers which carry on building the nest - queen lays more eggs - bigger nest built - more eggs etc until you can say bye-bye to any chance of rescuing your matching set of suitcases until October!

It is worth getting rid of the queens. It will save you a whole load of problems with a big nest later.

Watch out for the queens on curtains when the windows have been open at the end of a warm day, or on lampshade folds etc.

They don't like smoke. Set your roof on fire, that'll sort them out.
