Who would be your choice to replace him? And be realistic. . 1 - Steve Davis 2 - Paul Tisdale 3 - Neil Redfearn
Steve wouldn't warrant a mention Had he not played for us. As good a player as he was for us, Davis is a very inexperienced league manager, just under a year in charge at Crewe. If, as some claimed at the time of their appointments, it was wrong to set on Mark Robins & Keith Hill because they had only been in charge of lower league clubs (both were labelled as another Steve Parkin), then it would be the highest form of hypocrisy to want Steve as our new boss. The only thing that would be in his favour is the honeymoon period would be longer due to him being a well liked player in the past. All conjecture though, as we don't know the present & future plans of Barnsley, Keith Hill or Blackpool.
I would be devastated if Keith leaves. Not only do I believe he is the best man for the job, but I'd miss his interviews and general approach to the media. Steve Davis might turn out to be a good or great manager one day, but if anyone thinks he is more qualified to do the job than Keith was when appointed then they needs their heads reading. If Davis was appointed I'd fully expect meltdown on the BBS for the club's perpetuation of the lower league ***** theme.
He has a promotion under his belt and a track record of continuous improvement in league position with Rochdale over several seasons. Since he left, Rochdale have plummeted back into the bottom division - which tells it's own story. He then maintained BFC's Championship status in his first season and as things currently stand is on-course to do so again. So other than numerous years more experience, a promotion and Championship experience, Hill has nothing on Davis. But, as I said, that's not to say Davis won't turn out to be an excellent manager in the future - however he is fundamentally less experienced and as such 'qualified' to take the BFC job should it become available than Hill was or is.
One automatic promotion Two play offs and getting a perennially struggling bottom division club to finish in the top half of Division Two in four full seasons as manager. All this despite having to continually sell their best players (for example Glenn Murray, Adam Le Fondre, Will Buckley), yet still managing to play attractive, winning football. Being able to pick up unknowns from non league football, turn them into quality players, then sell them on to a Premier League club (Craig Dawson). Steve's had a great first year as manager at Crewe (despite them only being 18th at the moment), but it is only a year. There's no way he'd even be thought of as a potential manager had he not played for us.
Or if you look at it another way It took Keith Hill three and half years to get a club promoted from the basement division. Steve Davis did it at the first attempt.
Re: Or if you look at it another way Yes, a club that had never previously played at a level above the bottom division. So in 3 years Hill achieved something that no one else had achieved previously throughout the club's entire history.
Re: Or if you look at it another way I know the point you're making, but you are incorrect about Rochdale. They were promoted in 1969 and stayed in the third division for 5 years.
Re: Or if you look at it another way OK, I'll take your word for that... it only slightly dilutes my point though... "Yes, a club that had only previously achieved one promotion from the bottom division. So in 3 years Hill achieved something that had only previously been achieved once throughout the club's entire history."
Re: Or if you look at it another way Beat me to it. He has also developed a young player who he then sold to the biggest club in the world for £6m.
