A six year-old boy has crashed his family car while trying to drive himself to school.

The boy, who hasn't been named, missed his school bus so took it upon himself to make the journey alone.

Police reports say that the child took the keys for the 2005 Ford Taurus when his mother was asleep and successfully drove six miles.

He veered off the road several times and finally crashed after hitting an embankment and utility pole one-and-a-half miles away from his destination. The crash occurred at 7.40am on Monday in Virginia.

A police spokesperson said that the boy only suffered minor injuries and, after being checked over in hospital, was driven to school by the authorities.

The child's parents have been charged with neglect.
