...a town known for it's left-wing, socialist leaning politics can produce a board so full of right wing, xenophobic intolerance then you have to worry what's become of the rest of this country.

Just like the 80's we're creating a culture of finger pointing and blame.

Times are tough in the area, and education is relatively low. Leads to a disillusioned and disenfranchised community. Let's not forget, the NSDAP was formed on socialist democratic ideals...and look what happened there!

It's up to the rest of us, to stop people slipping.

I agree. But it's like the 30's. When there's a recession bordering on a depression immigrants are the "easy target", politicians point the finger, the media go along with it. There has been a rising tide of right-wing nationalism within Europe in the last few years.
As you say, if this is happening in Barnsley then what about the rest of the country, I used to dismiss UKIP but they could well make big strides at the next election as they feed off this rhetoric.
As I said yesterday - the last couple of days on both here and Facebook I've been astounded at comments over the shop in Goldthorpe, the immigrant debate and also comments sections in news threads about Mandela.
I need to get back to work because reading this stuff every day is driving me mad.

I was made redundant because a government-bailed out bank offshored thousands of well-paid IT jobs to companies in India, do I blame Indians for this? No, I blame the heads of the bank and the government.

This board is not typical of most of the people of Barnsley though.
If you had a political poll on here, it would be nowhere near the Labour majority you'd get in a general election. I reckon the largest part of the people who come on here are professional business people who by and large vote tory - not that that means everyone who is a well-educated businessman votes tory or that every chav votes labour but I've noticed this about the BBS for a long time, even in Labour's term in power.

UKIP will split the Labour vote just like the SDP did in years gone by.

The Tories will be out in full strength to vote even if its throwing it darn with ****.

Things can only get crapper, can only get crapper.........

I know your posting name from a long time ago :) I hope you find a job. My only advice would be to read interesting, positive, motivating things on the net. A cycle of reading claptrap will really bring you down :(

I'm really encouraged by the opposition on this board, to the racist, xenophobic, sexist, homophobic, bigoted bile that appears from time to time. Whenever it's reared its ugly head, we've collectively stamped it out. In spite of our other differences. I'm proud of that.

Cheers guys. Actually got a job starting next week at Capita, just something to bring some money in but not in IT and a lot less than what I was on before. Still looking in IT but got knocked back at an interview last week.

Jay - I asked the missus when I was getting made redundant if she wanted to move back that was the time to do it, and she didn't want to. Economy is as much of a wreck over there plus factor on top of that the healthcare situation there. Would be about a 6 month process for me to get a green card (to enable me to work). Now her dad has died theres less of a hold for her over there.

Was it a west-Yorkshire based bank, by any chance? FWIW, the IT contract market is on fire right now, if you're prepared to put yourself out there.

There are a lot of double standards on this board. I'm not accusing any one here, but often the same people who lash at those for using 'bigoted' language can often be found spouting the same 'bigoted bile' at other groups such as the 'rich'.
Just to be clear, I am certainly not defending Dragon Tyke. He's entitled to his own opinion, though he really doesn't do himself any favours. The immigration debate is something I am trying to do more and more reading on before I form a viewpoint. I'd encourage others to do the same.

It was previously a West Yorkshire based bank. Tried looking at contract stuff but not much in my area - old school COBOL stuff.

Fair enough if your wife doesn't want to, but...

I don't know you, we've only ever met once, but I've been reading your thoughts and opinions for going on 15 years. You clearly love America. You like their sports, you're interested in their politics, you have on-line American friends you discuss issues with, you holiday in America and you even married an American girl. None of that is a criticism, just an observation. I can't imagine there'd be anything more fulfilling for you than giving yourself the chance to live and work in America.

I haven't been keeping tabs and stalking you btw, it's just you get to know certain things about people if you spend so long in their company, even if it's just virtual company.

Best of luck in the new job.

Small world. I'm still at said bank. Have you thought about diversifying? BA, PM, Architect? That's where the contract work is.

I don't know about the COBOL stuff, but I have heard that a lot of the Wintel side has come back into the UK after problems with the levels of service from India.

BTW with average wage inflation in India running at over 7% per year (for past 40 years) and the UK running at 2.5% for the same period, it won't take long before India is significantly more expensive than the UK for IT workers, but we will have lost all our skills...

For those of us who haven't a clue about IT that post looks like you're taking the piss and suggests he should either work for British Airways, design some houses or become the Prime Minister.
