Whilst it wasn't a great performance by any of our strikers (I'd say big Vic had the biggest impact), I'd say the supply to them was pretty poor too. They coped better with the poor pitch, being a big side, but the amount of hopeless long balls we played was dreadful. It didn't help that every time we seemed to win a header in the final third, the referee gave a free kick the other way.
Our wing backs have been very important for us, with both Brittain and Styles being able to get into the box and cause problems recently. Swansea nullified that very well, so we were rendered toothless.
Last three games we've conceded in the 4th, 2nd and 2nd minutes, respectively. Add an OG from poor unlucky Big Vic, and we beat ourselves.
We need to line up 5 minutes earlier than the opposition, pretend to kick-off with an invisible ball, and run round stringing non-existent passes together, until the ref tells us it's time to kick-off properly. Get those opening 5 minutes out of our system without conceding.
Still think the one formation fits all approach gifts the opposition victories that wouldn't be so clear cut if we played a different way considering the quality we've got in the squad. Teams with a lot better players than us would lose away at Swansea if they played with 3 forwards and only 2 in central midfield.
They never had anything to bite on , very little creativity for the forwards today ,so I do not know why you are pointing the finger at the forwards
What sort of striker do we need though? Target man? Someone to challenge Woodrow? Someone with pace to challenge Chaplin? Can we afford anyone that is any better than our current front three? Who’s going to take any of the other half dozen strikers we have in the squad?
On paper, it does look a bit overly ambitious playing the same system against top teams that we use against lower teams. On balance, though, I can't complain about our points tally. Plus, if we chop and change too often, would that impede the players progress with Plan A?
My biggest problem with this system, against the better teams is, we have two players who play wider, outside Woodrow who still drops deep and links up with the midfield. So, who is meant to be in the box?!
Personally I think the time that Woodrow spent in the attacking mid slot (number 10, the hole, tip of the diamond, whatever it's called...) has been detrimental to his overall game. He doesn't seem to get as far forward as I'd like him to. I've lost count of the times the ball has been pinged across the box and he's been nowhere near. Although the same could be said of all our frontman, so it's perhaps a little unfair to single him out. He's putting a shift in, that's for sure.
