'Hands off reds boss' BARNSLEY boss Andy Ritchie is ready to commit himself to Oakwell – if the terms are right. Talks have begun between manager and chairman Gordon Shepherd in the wake of news that Sheffield Wednesday had enquired about Ritchie. His contract at Barnsley is due to expire in the summer. Ritchie said: "I'm just very, very flattered that they have shown an interest in me. It shows that someone has noticed the job you are doing. It's a nice ego boost for me. I'm pleased because I've worked hard." Barnsley issued a swift 'hands-off' rebuff to Wednesday yesterday. Chairman Shepherd said: "There was a call from Sheffield Wednesday requesting to talk to Andy Ritchie. It was refused. "I had a meeting with Andy. There were several items on the agenda. I explained what had happened and he said, 'okay'. "We emailed Sheffield Wednesday in the afternoon." Coventry head for Barnsley on Saturday having beaten Colchester last night. Goals from Stern John and Michael Doyle brought a 2-1 win. Coventry gave full back Clive Clarke his debut in that game, having signed him on a month's loan from Sunderland. Wednesday are believed to have talked to Gary Megson about the manager's job. It confirms the ex-Owls midfield player as being one of the candidates to succeed Paul Sturrock. Megson has been seen at Hillsborough – almost certainly for what was intended to be a hush-hush meeting. Football's grapevine believes that he is keen on a return to the Owls – and he is available. Nigel Worthington and Joe Royle have decided that they do not want to be considered for the position, and another possible contender, Nigel Pearson – though he had not yet received any contact from the Owls – has joined Newcastle as first-team coach. Graham Taylor and Kevin Blackwell may be among others still in the running. The Owls are refusing to identify their targets but chairman Dave Allen said last Friday that there are two lists: a long one of people who want the job, and one of around half a dozen to whom the club would like to speak. 24 October 2006 No way: Wednesday were refused permission to talk to Andy Ritchie about succeeding Paul Sturrock
That worries me slightly not sure how to take Ritchie's comments there, remember Mike Newell constantly saying how flattered he was to be linked with jobs, but always backed it up with something along the lines of "I've unfinished business here at Luton" or words to that effect.
If they make an official approach and pay compo he'll go, NO DANGER.. Truth is, they'll probably offer him a good contract and if he's a faliure he'll get a nice lumpsum to walk with... and if he's a success he's laughing. We're all aware that there is no sentiment or loyalty on football, if he's offered the job he's off.
