Why have we paid for two of the three signings we've made so far? A fee for Hourihane and a compensation package for Hemmings. Why are the majority of players we're linked with already contracted to a club that will need a transfer fee in order for us to get them? We need more experienced players. I know that, you know that, Ben Mansford knows that and Danny Wilson knows that. There are hundreds if not thousands of out of contract players available for nowt, many of whom would sign for a pittance because they might not get a job at all. Many of them would jump at the chance to sign for Barnsley. I'm not talking about quality players, just random players to fill the squad. If we'd got hardly any money we'd just hoover up some of these and attempt to cobble together a side. But we haven't done, we've signed no randoms at all. We've targeted two players that have cost us money and signed a 'keeper who looks like a decent prospect. And we're being linked with further signings that will cost us money. If we've nowt, there's no point waiting, get the cheap **** in and work with them because we'll not be able to afford better in three weeks than we can now. The only thing worth waiting for and pursuing is quality. The skint argument makes no sense. If it did we'd be signing **** that no one wants and we're not doing that.
Yeah but that doesn't re-inforce long held prejudices and an overwhelming sense of entitlement now does it ?
Bottom line is, the transfer activity will be judged by performances on the pitch. IMO, anything outside top 6 by Christmas, will be viewed as underachievement
Great post Jay.I haven't seen one transfer so far in our division where a player I would want has signed for another club. And like you say we are actually spending money on our targets.
It seems pretty obvious that Wilson had targets in mind & is playing the long game. Better that than a squad of about 30 players (last season) & only a quarter been capable
Rubbish. I've just seen a car with the reg plate: H4NDY S1D3 in the car park. I'm sure Peter knows that it's not road legal. Get hoovering, Reds
I'm eating a bit of humble pie with what's going on at the minute. I thought (still do a little) that we're really going to struggle considering the 60% rules & us carrying the contracts of Jean/Nyatanga/Kennedy/Steele/O'Grady/Cranie etc. I still think we will and that's why we were so keen to get shut of O'Grady for 500k. But it in terms of recruitment I'm not and won't bairn about us taking our time and going for the right players. Danny is exactly the right man to build us some foundations for this league and beyond.
What does this actually mean? What are these long held prejudices? Have you reviewed your position now on the ownership situation?
Oh hello Conan's Dad's here. Since relegation there's been a steady stream on here eager to stick he boot in to anything the club does on and off the field. Some seem to revel in the fact that we 'are skint' and so on the downward spiral. They seem to derive perverse pleasure from criticising the club. Me ? I think our current situation has been 8 years in the making. It's not Danny Wilson or Ben Mansford's fault. Until I drop for the euromillions and clear the lot out, then we are where we are. imho we look like starting afresh on and off the field, so I reserve the right to change my mind, not just criticise because it backs up a view I used to hold. All depends on your natural persona and outlook I suppose.
You've spent the last God knows how long criticising the current regime. What's caused this revisionist/hypocritical attitude you're now adopting?
They seem to be trying to improve things. Their mistakes etc got us here in my opinion, but there you go. Alternatively I could get myself wound up into a self indignant rage and keep trying to affirm old attitudes and opinions. Then have to come on here and tell people that I'm really an easy going fun sort in reality.
Nothing has improved that I can see so no idea what you're looking at. They do say the recent converts are the biggest zealots but you're all over the place.
Read what I put - 'trying to improve things' - ie the appointing of 2 new commercial people - which has led to the club pushing itself as a conference/meeting centre - a gradual improvement on the commercial side. I've said before it'll be a 3yr min period before we can judge Mansford (and Wilson) - I know that's heresy to your 'I must have it now' attitude but there you go. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
