where the fk does a minimum of 8 years come into it?

A 19-year-old who plotted a massacre at his former college has been jailed for life with a minimum term of eight years.

Liam Lyburd was convicted at Newcastle Crown Court of possessing an arsenal of weapons including pipe bombs and a gun, with intent to endanger life.

The judge said his threats showed he was a significant risk to the public.

In a deleted file recovered from his computer Lyburd wrote: "People will die, there's no question about that."

If he shows no sign of remorse/rehabilitation etc there's the prospect of being in for life.

I always thought life meant 25/30 years? In my opinion if you do something worthy of the sentence, life should mean life.

It's just bad reporting. It's a life sentence, not jailed for life, which means the sentence lasts a lifetime, so even if someone is released they can be recalled to prison at any time should they breach conditions of their parole or commit another crime. The minimum term means he has to serve at least that period of time after which, as Ponty rightly says, there's no guarantee of parole.

Whole life tariffs do exist but are pretty rare.

Not saying whether the term in this case is right are not by the way

Rare indeed. There are less than 100 prisoners currently serving whole life tariffs in the UK.

This waste of oxegen was plotting mass murder not topping someone who has nailed his bird. Surely the minimum eight years should apply for everyone he hoped to rub out!

Offenders aged 18 to 21 although subject to the adult criminal law, serve any custodial sentence in a young offender institution. The prevailing ethos is that of reform and rehabilitation. Minimum sentences therefore tend to be lesser, with most offenders being deemed capable of redemption. Not saying that's right or wrong - but that's how it is.
