Watch these: http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=news;storyid=5519;sess= http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/37870/winter-tyres-vs-summer-tyres Mine are already on.
Impressive. Have you got two sets of wheels, one with summer tyres, the other with winter tyres? What's the wear like on the winter tyres? The guy in the video said 700 and odd quid. Is that about right? It'd be cheaper for me to crash the car.
Got some on my little van!! Never used em before last year - But they were brilliant. Never put a foot wrong!! Still on look out for a cheap set of wheels though so i dont have to 're-fit' every year!! Got em back on on Friday morning!!
Re: I'll be honest You'll be thinking back to that post when you're upside down, in the river, down that ravine over Woodhead, one snowy night when you're coming back from your dad's. If fate is ever to be tempted, what you have written is a prime candidate.
Had them for the last 2 years. I don't bother with changing tyres in the summer. In point of fact I have done 12,000 miles on them and the minimum tyre depth is 4mm. Considering I normally only manage 20K on a set, I see no point in changing the tyres. Costwise £90 each on a BMW 5 series.
2 sets of rims as its easier and saves me 30 quid a chuck to get swapped - also dropped from 19" to 18" on second set. Get the tyres off mytyres.co.uk or summat- miles cheaper. Mine were aboue 100 quid a corner. The tyres last longer because in winter the rubber goes hard on summer ones and wear faster. So it works out cheaper in the long run. Ive not bought new summer tyres for quite a while. I wouldn't do another winter without them now - especially in a bmw like ive got at the mo. Plus i live up a non gritted lane thats right off the beaten track.
Ive been doing it for a few years - first year was because I was driving to Austria and needed them - but they make a huge difference in the UK in snow or even just cold and icy - For my car I am looking at just under £800 for a set of 4 - but thats the same price as the manufacturers recommended summer tyres. Costs me £40 twice a year to get them swapped. but the wear rate on the winters I am using is actually better than my summer tyres! The garage does store the set I am not using included in the cost though. New wheels would be easier but because my car has TPMS it complicates things - either I buy a second set of wheels with the valves at some astronomical cost or have to drive round with a continual warning light and beeping every few miles telling me I have a TPMS fault Havent put them on yet but will be doing soon
try mytyres.co.uk next - far far chaper! Got exactly same tyres delivered AND fitted for £200 less than Kwik fit! + you get quidco cashback with them.
My old man always had a set ..called 'Town and Country', in those days,no matter how bad the snow you could get about, and when the bad snow of three or four years ago came I tried to get some, mainly as a precaution,(my missus has elderly parents who could be in trouble if they were snowed in for any length of time), I couldn't buy them anywhere at home, and ended up buying them from a German website, delivered to the Uk in 5 days for £38 each,I have a spare set of rims for the fronts and just swap them for the snow, rather than general winter conditions.I would highly recommend them to anyone who thinks there may be a situation where they have to drive in snow.
Interesting thread - especially those that leave the winter tyres on throughout the year. I've been car sharing for the past few years, and only did 7K miles last year. Anyone had experience of "All Season" tyres?
Kwik fit prices are hilarious - even with their unbeatable deals they are still far more expensive than my local tyre place. I find the place I use has prices within a few pounds of mytyres and event tyres. who are also worth a look - they dont store the not used set though I successfully managed to claim for a tyre from my council when a huge water filed pothole split a sidewall on an almost new tyre on my wifes car- I had to give 2 quotes - so I got the second from Kwik fit - it was almost double the price for the same tyre as I was only buying one.
The ones ive got on at the mo are the Falken Eurowinter and they drive just like summer tyres - can hardly tell the difference with no snow. They are just not quite as good in real deep snow ive found but how often do we get that here. Most of the time its 2-3 inch tops on the roads. They do get me up and down the lane though thats the main thing. Ive had full on winters before and they got me through anything but on normal roads the cornering felt a bit sloppy - if you really pushed them they tended to slide quite a bit and the feeling was like scraping a square rubber across a table (if you catch my drift parden the pun ). None of that with these Falkens.
the last ones i had from Kwikfit were the marangonis with lifetime warranty on puctures etc. Something went wrong with the sidewalls and to their credit gave me a full refund no quibble. Id got 2 winters out of them as well.
