Agreed Its time it was dropped it all together. Most of those who sing it were still in short pants in 1984. Incidentally, why sing it against Forest and not Derby? South Derbyshire miners worked same as the Notts men and a large slice of Derby fans are from the Swadlincote area.
Re: Agreed Have people ever forgot about the nazis and death camps. What the Notts miners did was I am all right jack and fukc you. She then sold them down river. So we can forget them and Thatcher. I do not think so. The lesson to be taught to those who were in short pants is never trust the Tories or any other government and be very careful before you trust people around you.
Re: Agreed I never said anything about forgetting it and certainly not forgiving. However, as you rightly say, Thatcher stabbed them in the back so they got what they deserved in the end. I just feel that it creates an unpleasant atmosphere at matches against Forest and is misdirected because the same applies to their fans as to ours, most of them are too young and the vast majority of those that are old enough were not involved in mining anyway. Should we have a go at modern day German fans and sing songs about gas chambers?
In answer to Brush's last point: whenever we play Germany there is always a loud chorus of "ten German bombers". In fact in the centre of Gelsenkirchen at the World Cup quarter final there were twenty thousand England fans singing it for about an hour complete with blow up bombers.
Not sure that "justified" is the correct term. In many ways it is but that's not why people sing it or chant "scabs". Football is tribal and the rivalries have to be cranked up at matches especially away games. That is why I can chant scabs even though I lived in Nottingham for three years or sing three German bombers even though I lived over there for a year and had a German girlfriend for three years. The Germans were never bothered about the singing and I guess only a few of the Forest fans will feel guilty about their betrayal. That doesn't matter - I hope we never end up with just polite applause for jolly good play by either team.
Last time I went to Forest, when the scab chant started it was ok, but when it went on for 20 minutes virtually non-stop, I found it boring and embarrassing to be honest. Likewise the "Your dad's a lovely person and so are you" at Peterborough; funny as **** to start with.
The miners strikes was before my time, I'm in my 30s, but obviously I appreciate the impact, I don't doubt that anyone from Barnsley doesn't, but I do find it a bit silly when fans in their teens and 20's, which is 50% of the away fans more often than not, are chanting "Scab" to forest fans who are also made up of people in their teens and 20s chanting something in return. Some people just sing it without actually understanding what it means.
I just hope our fans make plenty of noise whether that's chants about scabs or football related songs I don't really care. I
o aye SCAB SCAB SCAB That will mean a lot to a team that's battling for survival, is it asking too much just for 1 fecking game.
really our teams on its last legs needing all the help it can get after last nights result and you think a history lesson will help? Personally I'm more interested in the future of our club at the moment
North Yorks. You've never liked the SCAB chants so don't link them with our survival. I'll personally be very upset if the first SCAB happens later than ten seconds after kick off ( I don't count those before the match!)
Ok. So I assume you'd support a minute of SCAB chants followed by ten of "come on you reds" then maybe thirty seconds SCAB refrain then maybe half an hour of "Jason, JasonJason, JasonJason, Jason, Jason Scotland" etc. ( as long as we don't go with "don't worry, about a thing, cos every ....... Drives me mad!)
