If you want the best guarantee of getting to school on time, and in one piece, you'd do a lot worse than a decent used Volvo from a reputable dealer.
Won't break the bank and good servicing will save you loads on repairs.

T4 I do like Volvos, but the nice ones are out of that budget. Thinking Freelander TD4. It wouldn't be for a year yet anyway, just starting to toy with a few ideas. I seem to change my mind every few months. An A3 1.9Tdi would be awesome, but possibly out of the budget unless I want one with over 70k miles
RE: T4 Suppose it depends what want in a car.
I assumed you were looking for a reliable workhorse to get you to and from your new job, at a fairly low cost.

RE: T4 Well yes that is partly true. But I'm also a young bloke, so want something fun to drive too. I'm not Tony from Holyoaks
Lot more choice and Value at Auction. I cannot for the life of me understand why people buy from Garages!! FFs, a garage will put anything between 3600 and 32000 on a car which you would have bought from a car auction for around £4.5k There is absolutely as much risk from buying from auction as there is from buying from a garage.A freind of mine bought a used 3 year old BMW 520 from Sandal in Wakefiels last year and when it went in for a gearbox issue, he found that the mileage was 11000 miles out from the records on the new selling garages records, and i have heard many similar issues with Audi and Ford. So if you have the cash go to BCA at Brighoise or Manheim at Rothwell.
Car Auctions are very handy if you can't get rid in the normal manner. Have only bought one at auction. Started well, nice interior, no rust. After 5 miles it looked like a destroyer laying a smoke screen.
RE: not much legal redress when buying at auction At auction a car is indemnified against finance , theft or insurance claim and this is a guarentee if the car is less than 5 years old, it will also guarentee mileage. If you buy a 3 year old car then more ohften than not you will get a day or more warranty which means you canhave the car checked over anif there is a fault you take it back, also you can identify a car on the auction day and have a good inspection of it. Older cars more than 5 years old are often sold as seen and you do have to have someone with you who knows a bit about cars to be safe, in saying that some main dealer garages will give a comprehensive check to their veichles before sale, an example is a "T" plate megane 1.4 RT i bought for my son from BCA, it had 48000miles, spots ,A con, alloys 2 owners ex Nidd Vale at Harrogate and i paid £1075 and it is faultless. I have bought cars at auction on and off for 16 years and have only had 2 bad ones, i have bought on behalf of others who have been extremely pleased and amazed at the money they can save as well as my family and freinds, and after all if you can save a thousand pound on a car compared to a garage price and you set aside £300 for little bits of paint etc then you are still saving a lot more money.
