Wait until you see a replay of Peterborough's second. It's actually scored by two Posh players. Two of them head it as the same time. From a corner. Stood next to each other 8 yards from goal, smack in the middle. Not a Barnsley player within 5 yards of them. It's astonishing. Or it would be for any other team at any level of football. Par for the course for us.
Our man marking has been pi55 poor all season. Especially the amount of room given to opposing teams wide players. ( Given the freedom of Barnsley.)
I thought our kick off after their second was even more bizarre. Woodrow leaves taking the kick off so he can overload the left side… then whoosh… straight into touch miles over their heads.
I 'enjoyed' the one a bit after that where Brittain and Andersen with no Posh player anywhere near them contrived to play a lovely 1-2 with each other and put it out for another corner.
Unreal how anyone can end up so free at a set piece considering we bring everyone back to defend.. Still baffles me why we dont leave anyone up for the counter.
Whilst we defended poorly for the two goals, the amount of chances we wasted at the other end is utterly criminal. We've actually conceded fewer goals than 5 other teams in this league. 21 less than Peterborough! But the fact that we've only scored 31 in 42 games is the reason we're going down.
I know naff all about football tactics but applying a bit of logic is all that you need. Our keeper is often crowded off the ball with defenders and opponents crammed into the goal area. At best his visibility is severely restricted and there is the increased risk of ricochets finding the back of the net Put one player on the half way line and the attacking side have to keep at least one player back . Two Barnsley players up field means at least two, possibly three opponents, have to stay near them. So at least 4,possibly 5, fewer players crowding our box at set pieces. It also gives us at least some chance of a quick counter . Zero players guarantees no outlet and the ball can simply end up back into the danger zone giving the opposition a second chance. Midfielders or defenders having to race back the length of the field when our forwards are already halfway there gives us the edge. They also have more options, and can either run at goal or hold the ball up to lay of to on rushing players breaking out of defence. Like you I never understood the 'every man back for set pieces' mentality of coaches.
That sounds harsh. He’s come back into an absolute shambles of a team after a 4 month injury. There’s a long list of players in front of him that should be getting grief.
By my reckoning if the stats are correct then we’ve had 38 shots in our last two games and scored a paltry one goal which is pretty pathetic.
Sorry but he didn't do any better before his injury. He is too weak he cannot hold the ball up he can't tackle. Basically he is a goal poacher such as Lineker but he can't poach goals when he doesn't get in the penalty area. So all in all he briings nothing to the team, along with a lot of others this season
That second goal was pathetic. The first corner they have all game and they manage to get it past Walton.
Not the job he should be doing and that is down to the tactical ineptitude of the last 2 managers who see to think he is a midfielder. Woodrow was always at his best in a 2 man forward line with Moore.
A lot of people make the same claim. And yet they started a grand total of 11 league matches together. In one of those Woodrow went off after 42 minutes and in another Moore was withdrawn at half time.
