Barnsley left rocking by on-song Owusu STATUS Quo's bass player, Rhino Edwards, has written a song about Brentford striker Lloyd Owusu. Other than that there's nothing at all naff you could say about the lad. He had more in his locker than Barnsley could handle on Saturday. Scored two and walked off to loud applause from a fans more convinced than ever they'll be in the Championship next season. Why would they doubt it? They'd just out-played, over-powered and seen off their closest rivals for second spot. It was as bad as it has been all season for Barnsley, save for a few minutes when Tommy Wright pulled it back to 2-1. Even manager Andy Ritchie knew his team weren't worth a draw. So when ref Patrick Miller made a penalty out of a mis-kick to leave the score at 3-1, it was kind of fair, even if the decision was wrong. Well before that, Barnsley got a real seeing-to in the first half. Brentford's two goals were a couple of touches of class and 3-0 wouldn't have gone against the grain. Goal one was a nifty touch to turn in a deep centre from Jay Tabb with Ricky Newman's right boot and on the volley. Within 10 minutes it was 2-0 as Owusu snapped up a chance from 18 yards out, placing the ball into Nick Colgan's goal before Matt Carbon could make a challenge for an Alex Rhodes' pass. Brentford boss Martin Allen couldn't help but big up the striker for it. "I'm pleased for Lloyd, he has made a fantastic contribution to the whole team throughout the season," he said. "He hasn't got the goals he would have liked but that finish when he went through one v one and chipped it over the keeper ... I thought it was Ruud van Nistelrooy, not Lloyd. In the first half, he was as good as I've seen, he was a real handfu. And, believe it or not, Isaiah Rankin, a real Barnsley hero/villain in his Oakwell time, was a load of trouble too. But Barnsley rode their luck and kept it at 2-0. They even watched Sam Sodge's header following a corner from Tabb hammer harmlessly against the woodwork. Barnsley had to improve and they did on the restart. Reward came as Antony Kay's punt into the area was skyed by Andy Frampton. Barnsley's Tommy Wright, on for Marc Richards, followed the flightpath of the ball and landed a close-range goal with his head. The game was snatched back by Brentford seven minutes from the end from the spot. Darren Pratley found Callum Willock in penalty box. He swung and missed the ball with Brentford claiming Neil Austin had some part to play in that. Ref Miller, was well placed, pointed to the spot and Owusu got his second from a penalty Barnsley and Austin pleaded not guilty to the penalty but admitted it had been one bad afternoon for virtually the lot of them. Said Ritchie: "We only turned up after 45 minutes. But we're still up there in the league and one bad game in 10 is not bad. "In the first half we just weren't there, we weren't on form, we didn't compete with them. We've got to say something about that, we've got to analyse that. We'll probably have a little chat about it on Monday. Then we'll get ready for the Hartlepool game. "You can't hide the fact that the first half was a non-event for us and that was a little bit disconcerting. "You do take a little bit of heart because you know it's going be be a hard game here and one or two things went against us, but that's all I'll say about that." It had to be ref Miller he wasn't happy with. The officials weren't too clever. It all started badly for them as a linesman got crocked in the warm-up and the game was delayed 10 minutes as a qualified ref from the crowd volunteered to work as the fourth official. The kick-off was postponed as he learned how to operate the electric numbers board. Allen reckoned in his dressing room they were telling jokes while the ref and his crew sorted themselves out. After the final whistle, he was as upbeat as Ritchie was down. "They (the players) were terrific, the first half was superb," he said. "In the second half we looked very solid. "It was a just a good performance all round. The supporters were magnificent. We heard them all in the dressing room before the game. This place was buzzing before the game." And buzzing after too. Owusu - if not Status Quo - saw to that. simon.meeks@sheffieldnewspapers.co.uk 13 March 2006 « Previous PageNext »Page 1 of 1 More Barnsley Sport Search Our News Archive
"So when ref Patrick Miller made a penalty out of a mis-kick to leave the score at 3-1, it was kind of fair, even if the decision was wrong." So from this we can deduce that if a team is dominating the game but not putting the ball in the net enough, then it's ok for the ref to award a very dodgy penalty?!
