    Soccer aces' race arrest

THREE Barnsley Football Club players have been arrested as part of an investigation into a racist attack on a taxi driver in Sheffield.
Today officials at Oakwell remained tight-lipped about the incident but said no disciplinary action had so far been taken against any of the unnamed men.

The arrests followed an incident earlier this month which is understood to have happened after the players had a night out in Sheffield.

A taxi driver has claimed he was subjected to a racially-motivated assault by two of the players and that the third man racially abused him, before all three made off without paying the taxi fare. The alleged attack on Penistone Road, Sheffield, took place four days after Barnsley FC were beaten 3-1 by Norwich City and three days before the Reds lost again 2-0 to Sunderland at Oakwell.

Police have confirmed the arrests and say all three players have been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Barnsley FC chairman Gordon Shepherd said today: "We are making no comment but we will conduct an internal investigation."

Hafeas Rehman, from Sheffield Taxi Trade Association, said: "I am aware of the incident and the driver was absolutely distressed. Footballers should be role models and if role models are going to be involved in things like this, what hope have we?"

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Police have arrested a 25-year-old man and two 24-year-old men in connection with an incident in a taxi travelling along Penistone Road in Sheffield on Wednesday March 7.

"The 25-year-old man and one of the 24-year-old men were arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated assault and making off without payment. The remaining 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order and making off without payment.."

A Barnsley FC spokesman added: "No players have been charged, no players have been disciplined and the club is not commenting further on this matter."

Lets hope some good can come out of this by getting rid of the culprits and with it the drinking culture which has crept back within the club.

    drinking culture????

proffesional or otherwise the Lads should be out at that age enjoying a night out.
so long as its not interfering with matchday.
I believe more harm is done cooping them up, they are young and if they wish they should be able to enjoy life other wise why bother.......... (blagger)

    Soccer aces !!

that really does prove that the Star has a penchant for mellodrama and hyping things ever so slightly (and by that I'm not suggesting the storey isn't true)

Seems footballers abusing taxi drivers is getting in the news at the moment

John Hartson is expecting a visit from the bizzies after drunkenly throwing up in a cab, before refusing to pay the GBP85 fare and flashing his backside at the driver. "I've got a great cute b*m,"
said Hartson to cabbie Mo Ajaib - who was recording their conversation on his phone. "You're a dirty b*tch," he added.
Leicestershire police plan to investigate, though Hartson has now vowed to pay up.
