I don't speak any Polish, but the commentators both on bbc and eurosport pronounce this young lady's name as Swiontek. That can't be right surely. It's really starting to grate which I know is a bit pathetic, but it is little things that this that irritate the most. Anyone know which is the right pronunciation?
Polish is such a difficult language, I wouldn't even hazard a guess. It's not particularly phonetic. When Wroclaw is pronounced Vrotswahf you can see what I mean. Poles are generally helpful if you happen to find any on twitter or other social media channels if you get no joy here.
My father was Polish. He never taught us the language he said it was easy "you say what you see." Fine but you have to take into account the accents applied to letters that change the sound I pointed once to a Polish town called 'Lancut' and pronounced it in the way we would. He shook his head. 'Winesoot.' (Accent on L and C)
