I don't think I have ever seen an atmosphere at Oakwell like tonight. I was lucky, I was working so missed the first-half. To see so many people sitting, watching, and then realising that this team, my team, our team, was dying on its feet. I remember the Wolves game at home, when Brian Howard ran 50 yards to charge down a clearance from the Wolves penalty area. I remember the 10 man heroics against Wednesday at Hillsboro. We lost, but I was so proud of the way they fought and battled, and made Wednesday fans admit we had played them off the park. I remember all that, and looked out at the 11 men on the park tonight and asked myself "Is this the same team?" In 2 months, what has happened that could change a team so much? Mr Shepherd, when Andy Ritchie was sacked, I was shocked, but I thought it was for the good of the club. After 2 games, and 2 wins under Davey I thought, "Well we can't play pretty and win, so lets play ugly and win". I even telephoned 606 and said that. But now its not even that. The football is non-existent. The players seem to have no idea what they are doing. The tactics and team selections look absolutely bizarre at times. And finally, and most worrying, the crowd are starting to turn. Early season, the crowd gave the team 100% support, because we knew that it was going to be tough this season. We knew the players were trying their damndest to win. We also knew that we would be playing teams that were Premiership sides in all but name, and we appreciated the effort given by the players. We looked on the side as "Battling Barnsley" again. But can we do that now? Yet these are the same players. We need someone to inspire these players again. To revive the fighting spirit. And I'm afraid to say, Simon Davey cannot be that man. I really wanted him to succeed. Because if he succeeded, Barnsley FC succeeded, and that is what everyone wants. But I cannot believe that the team that played against Preston and Southend believe in the manager. You are the Chairman. You have done [and no one can argue with this], a magnificent job in turning the financial side of the club round, and for that I thank you from sincerely. But you now have a difficult choice to make. I hope you make the right one.
Fantastic post. So gutted tonight. What has happened to our club, and who is going to put it right???!!!
