Top of the rock is not as busy and better view than empire state building. If you are doing empire state building go early. Its not supposed to open until 9.00, but we got there about 8.40 and were at the top before 9.00.

Walk across brooklyn bridge and find the little park by the waterfront. Watch the sun go down and new york light up from brooklyn. Best 0$ you will spend.

If you are going to use subway, get either a weekly card, or some kind of pass. Some stations do not have ticket machines and it can be a bugger if you are stuck at one without a ticket at night.

If you don't have time for statue of liberty/ellis island take the staten island ferry. It goes past them both (not close but you get a decent view), its free and should only take just over an hour there/back.

Unless you are really into art or have a full day to waste, give the met museum a miss. Its just too big, and unless you know what you want to see, can seem like you are just wandering for hours.

Guggenheim and moma are ok, if short on time I preferred the moma, although the guggenheim is a great building.

    Or a Rangers game

A walk in Central Park on a Sunday morning, recommend the Metropolitan Museum, go up the Empire State Building if the visibility is decent. Boat trip around Manhattan.
Bars - Gingerman just off 5th ave, or Heartland Brewery which is in the Empire State building.
I'm going in a few weeks.

I found rangers quite hard to watch. If you are quite far back, you can barely see puck. You are relying on the crowd and screen to see what happened. Good atmosphere though, singing and stuff, and would say go if you have time.

Art is a very subjective thing, didn't like the Guggenheim at all and the building just reminded me of a multistory car park! Really like the Met though, but you are right - can wander about in there for hours, not that I find that a problem. Depends if he likes modern and abstract art much, in which case the Guggenheim. Not been to MoMA though - might give that a go next month, it's back in Manhattan isn't it after refurbishment? I'm planning taking subway across to Brooklyn and then walking back. Fancy the Brooklyn Brewery tour but they only do it on Saturdays and it gets quite busy, so I'll content myself with a bar instead!
Tenement Museum is worth a visit, as is the Air-Sea museum which is housed on a WW2 aircraft carrier.
Can get a pass that covers entry to Empire State building, Air-Sea museum, Guggenheim and 1 or 2 others I can't remember, buy it at any of those locations - it's worth it if you are planning to see 3 or more of them.

He said for weekend, so don't think met is worth it in that time.

I liked moma best, not too big and overbearing, and is quite central.

If you are in brooklyn then definitely worth finding this park on waterfront between brooklyn and manhatten bridges. Watch sun go down then walk back across brooklyn bridge.

We used one of these, gets into a lot of attractions free, and lets you skip queues in some places. But you need to make sure you are going to cram loads in, if you only do a couple of things, its probably not worth it. The air-sea museum on the intrepid aircraft carrier is ok as well, but think its gone for refit.

If you are interested in architecture then empire state, flatiron, rockafeller, chrysler, ny library and grand central terminal are quite close to each other. Can definitely see all of them in a couple of hours. You can't go up chrysler building, but you can go into the lobby, and some shops underneath. Grand central is really good as well, worth popping in, if only to go down in the food court where there are loads of little stalls selling loads of different foods.

How could I forget Grand Central Station

Well worth a visit, and have lunch downstairs - some great food stalls, and then imagine what you could get to eat at a railway station in England!

    Grand central terminal!

Although it has been properly called "Grand Central Terminal" for a century, many people continue to refer to it as "Grand Central Station". Technically, that is the name of the nearby post office, as well as the name of a previous rail station on the site."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Central_Terminal
Couldn't resist, if it had been anybody else I wouldn't have bothered!

I went round about this time last year

and got stuck in the worst blizzard for 200 years. you in the Waldorf Towers? Should be a good view of the snow from there.

serious tip: if you're doing tourist attractions, wear trousers that dont need a belt and shoes that are easy to get on and off, cos you'll be getting dressed and undressed all day. and for snap, try De Niros place The Tribecca Grill.

I was there last march, and didn't think security was too bad. Except for the statue of liberty which has more security than airports.

Ooh and while I mention it, if you are doing the statue of liberty, get down to battery park well early. You can get tickets to go up to the first part of the statue. Its free, but there are only a limited number, and you have to be there really early to get some.
