My PS2 has finally conked out and won't work, so its time for an upgrade.

Generally my gaming is pretty limited to sports games, I'm not a big player of shoot-em-ups etc, so which console would you recommend as the best? I'm really undecided.

Yea, it looks like we're heavily outnumbered here but PS3 for me. I'm now only a casual gamer so the PS3 is the better option IMO due to the online portion being free, rather than paid for like x-box live. I have no doubt that the x-box live is probably better organised, but the cost wouldn't be worth it for me.

If you do opt for the 360 just be ready to send it back to M$ to cure the dreaded "Ring of Death"

    Is PS3 online free?

I wasn't aware of that - it could be a factor for me. I'll probably only be a casual gamer too and I generally find Sony to be better for sports games.

I really don't know what to do. (casualty)

Unfortunately not mate. I know a couple of people who've only bought theirs in the last 18 months and both have had ring of death. Fair do's M$ repair free, but the inconvenience of it all is the problem - and being without the machine a few days.

Yeah mate, totally free. Like I say the x-box live is probably better presented etc, but for free I don't think you can beat PS3. Eventually they may start to charge, which is when my online gaming will cease. I don't play regularly enough to warrant paying all the time. As Tyketastic says, all the best sports ones are on both, but the free online gaming was the big sway for me - as well as my confidence in Sony.

But for seasoned PS gamers I reckon thats a bonus. It is for me anyway. Sony did have a new design in mind, and were adamant that they were going to use it - but after a mammoth amount of complaints and requests they buckled and went with the tried and tested formula.

    PS3

You get a blu ray player thrown in, which is more than you can say for your obsolete Xbox HD-DVD player

In fairness Ive not played a new XBOX, and I know people are terratorial about their own kit. But the PS3 is the full package and has a very long shelf life.

Well, maybe I'm getting carried away here. Another vote for the right choice I mean ;-)
