My guess is that EastStander wont be in favour of this brilliant idea

    From Ananova

    '2 b o not 2b?'

Education chiefs may turn Shakespeare into text speak so children can relate to it.

The Department of Education has issued guidelines to schools to be more creative. They are even backing the scheme to take a new approach to plays by the Bard.

Classic lines such as "To be, or not to be?" would be revamped into "2b o not 2b?".

Sean Dickinson, headteacher of Park Community School in Havant, Hants, said: "The core issue with Shakespeare is that it's become dull.

"Using technology like text messaging is one approach to fuel expression and creativity."

Colin Chuter, of Priory School, Portsmouth, said: "Children can lose their way, and this is one way of combating that."

According to The Sun Lindsey Lovett, 15, said: "I think it's a great idea. Shakespeare is well out of date."

But Mark Courtice, director of the New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth, said: "If you just said to young people, 'Here's Shakespeare as text', it might confuse them."

    Great Idea

I think they should put graffiti all over the Sistine Chapel as well, as that's also well out of date.

How is writing in text talk

going to help people to understand Shakespeare's works?

It may help teenagers to read the written word but not to comprehend it.

Probably need to re-write Carry on Cleo as well

M8s Romns (insert whispered Cntrmn) or even just change it to
    "Oi you lot listen up"

some how "Friends Romans Countrymen, lend me your ears" has a bit better ring to it

    Arrrrgggh!

    (banghead)

Shouldn't we concentrate on teaching the kids to spell rather than encouraging them not to?

I've no problem with modern interpretations (such as the recent BBC ones) to use language and settings they understand so that the basic premise of the story is understood but this is just ridiculous.

    P.s. You were right Dave!

    p.s.s. It's Shakespeare!

    Agree completely EastStander...

Education these days is far too geared towards making the subject matter understandable (i.e. easy) as opposed to teaching students to understand the subject matter. I'm all in favour of using modern and creative methods but what's the point of teaching English if we feel it's value is so limited we're prepared to debase it's principles in order for students to "attain" a qualification. How are future generations going to understand and teach our culture and heritage if this is the value we place on it?

With comments like this; According to The Sun Lindsey Lovett, 15, said: "I think it's a great idea. Shakespeare is well out of date." they shouldn't bother and pack the little darlings off to MacDonalds for induction. They aren't going any further careerwise.

Even better - just let McDonalds run the schools...

In Maths we could teach (99p + Big Mac) = Great Value - it amounts to the same perversion of principle that the text / Shakespeare does (Vodafone et al must be rubbing their hands at the prospect of all that potential advertising)...

In fact let's just go the whole hog and give up any hope of educating our kids correctly and sell our minds, souls and history the American megacorps...

A lot of people blame Muslims / asylum seekers etcetera for the destruction of the British culture when, if we let things like this happen, we've only got ourselves to blame...
