Last year, around October time, I'd been posted to a job in North Yorkshire, up near Catterick and Darlington, and I got placed on this job with a guy I'd never met before. He was a southern bloke, and a really good sort. Turns out he'd lived in Rotherham in the late 70s, early 80s, as he'd married a lass there. During that time he followed Rotherham - fair enough they were a good side at that time. When I told him I was a Barnsley fan, he fell over himself telling me what a good side we had at that time too, and how good the Rotherham Barnsley derbies were (I have one on video, but to be fair, I think my first Barnsley game was circa 1984). He went through his favourite Barnsley players of that time - Trevor Aylott, Stuart Barrowclough, Mick McCarthy, Ian Banks, but he settled on Derek Parker, describing him in more detail saying what an intelligent player he was, good in the box etc So I asked 'In your opinion, was Derek Parker better than Glavin?'
    'FACKING 'ELL!!' he replied
    'NOBODY WAS BETTER THAN GLAVIN!!!'

This bloke wasn't even a Barnsley fan.

I can remember that Tony Towner - he was a tricky buggar! And 'I'd rather be rather be Hemeling than lager' Mr hughes was their manager.

Paul Stancliffe was a very good centre half in their team. Think we tried to sign him before he moved to the Blunts. Press were always comparing him and Macca. No contest!

Think how good he would have been if he had ever "played" for a full 90 minutes.

Aye that's right, 40 grand we paid which was a lot of money in those days.

And for the first few games he looked fat and useless, and we thought we'd wasted our money - which is why I never get on new players' backs if they don't shape up straight away.

    A salutary lesson that was.

A completely agree with the Fat and useless tag

    He was!

And I completely agree with you about giving new players time. In fact I tend to worry more about players who impress on their debut to be honest

Was he the bald guy with the tache who scored a hat-trick when they hit Chelsea for six in the early 80s?

    I concur.

A couple of players who looked great on their debuts: Chris Lumsdon and Gary Jones.

There has been nobody as good as Glavin, I remember the back heel at Bradford, Redfearn in my eyes is a legend for what he produced on the pitch for us and the fact that he still plays, but as a footballer and skill wise he couldn't live Glavin. my opinion!(bustin)
