Just had to go down and support the lads last night but was expecting a defeat but hoping for a draw. Then after some of the dross we've seen for the past few months we were treated to a fantastic game, a wonder goal and a win. The 400 mile journey home passed in a flash.
For the record. Plymouth hammered us in the first half hour. Don't know how many corners they had but at least we got lots of practice. Apart from their second goal I thought we dealt with the set pieces pretty well. I know Colgan doesn't come off his line but this must be known about and dealt with in training. Nyatanga won almost everything. Howard gave the ball away which lead to their first and I'd blame McCann for their second for trying to control the ball on our goalline for some reason.
We were by far the better team in the second half. Davey's switch to a clear 4-5-1 looked negative to start off with but Plymouth are such an attack minded team that, once we broke forward, Howard (playing in the centre again at last!) showed just how influencial he can be and Devaney seemed to be all over the pitch! Ferenczi won every ball played up to him but was getting frustrated cos the formation meant that Rajczi wasn't there to get any of his flick-ons. He dropped deeper and the head down to Devaney created one of the "best" goals ever witnessed watching The Reds given its significance as well as its sheer class.
Thought the ref was going to give them a chance to get back on terms by a) denying the clearest of pen appeals when Rajczi was brought down when clear through, b) not sending Hayles off for a deliberate kick at Rajczi (which connected!) and c) conjuring them a free-kick on the edge of the box after 93 mins. Fortunately Ferenczi showed again that he is a great finisher in the last minute to make it safe and all of us long suffering fans went bonkers.
Fair play to the Plymouth fans who were very complimentary when we were leaving the ground (although I have to admit that I only understood a fraction of what they said!).
I reckon only 7 points now needed. We can do it.
