O'Hanlon puts Davey up with Everton boss

PLENTY in football were surprised when Simon Davey landed the Barnsley job.

Kelham O'Hanlon wasn't one of them. The former Rotherham United keeper, now first team coach at Oakwell, rates Davey in the same class as Everton's David Moyes and Watford's Adie Boothroyd.
O'Hanlon, aged 44, and Davey worked together at Preston under Moyes. Davey was running the youth team at Deepdale during O'Hanlon's eight match stint as Preston boss.
"Simon is very enthusiastic, he is knowledgeable, works his socks off, is as honest as the day is long," O'Hanlon reckoned. "You can't ask for more than that.
"A lot of people were surprised when Adie Boothroyd got the Watford job, a lot of people were surprised when David Moyes got the job at Preston. These guys are the hungry guys, the guys who want it desperately, they are young intelligent highly motivated guys, who know what they're doing and who will be an asset to any football club.
"People laughed when Adie Boothroyd got that job they're not laughing now. I know Adie every well.
O'Hanlon is third in the Barnsley chain of command.
He took the reserves to Sheffield Wednesday yesterday while Davey and his deputy, Ryan Kidd, were away from the club scouting for players.
O'Hanlon's first match with the first team was 2-0 win at Luton.
"I come in with my eyes wide open, we're in the bottom three, we're in a relegation dogfight. I know because I've seem it 100 times before but we're not frightened by it. You've got to look straight down the barrel," he said.
"The attitude I saw on Saturday was first class. But we've got to have that every week. We've got to have that in every training session and every game from now to the end of the season."

Honest answer

no idea. I think we are trying, and can only hope that we're not aiming too high and that realistic targets wont be put off by our league position. I dont think fees are a problem, wages might be but its more a case of being able to get a player to commit on a permanent deal with the knowledge that the next 4 months is going to be a battle and we may be relegated. not easy when every Championship club is looking to do business before end Jan.

And go where you're going to
Think for yourself
Cos I won't be there with you

I left you far behind
The ruins of the life that you have in mind
And though you still can't see
I know your mind's made up
You're gonna cause more misery

Do what you want to do

Although your mind's opaque
Try thinking more if just for your own sake
The future still looks good

RE: Honest answer

The way I see it though is if we sign similar players to what he have signed since Ricthie left , jury is still out on all of them for me, and they dont improve the team straight away then I can't see how the fans can come together when the club doesn't look like it has delivered on the quality they said Ritchie rejected.

Can you honestly say that if Ritchie had signed the players we have done you would have been happy?

I agree with TFP

we needed 5 quality signings or thereabouts in August, and it was Ritchies decision (categorically) to go with the same squad as they have earnt the right to give it a go. With the benefit of hindsight, maybe Andy would agree as well. I also think that at times during the first few months of the season, we could have brought people in that Andy decided against. Kazim Richards is one example. I think of the players we have brought in under difficult circumstances (league position, wage cap rules, availability of players, competition from other clubs) McCann looks a good signing, still finding his feet but a similar player to McPhail in some respects, Knight wasnt match fit, Wallwork was exactly what we needed but unfortunate, and I cant comment on Eckersley, Lucas or Mattis cos I havent seen enough of them. If Ritchie has signed them earlier, when we needed them, I reckon we'd have picked up more points than we have, yes, without doubt. Would I have been happy? My expectation was for a battle against relegation and would/will be overjoyed with 4th bottom. If we do go down, at least we can look back and say we gave it a go.

Does Kazim-Richards still play for Sheff Utd?

Whilst expecting a battle against relegation I thought we had enough to stay up. It transpired that some of our better performers from last season have been found wanting at this level, although some of them may be better in better teams.

Whats done is done however , I still think we have enough to stay up this season , coupled with the fact that this league has many more poor teams in it than I thought when we came up.

I just want us to go down fighting , i.e. trying to score , rather than what appears to be a plan to try and lose by as few as possible.

Of the 5 we needed, 2 were strikers. I am praying that we get at least one, and you are right, goal scoring is likely to be our problem even though our defensive record thus far has been poor, getting organised at the back is achieveable with average players, but only going to win points if we are likely to score down the other end. We've wasted sooooooooooo many chances this season, its criminal. but I'd take 8 boring 1 nil wins straight off.

George Harrison.

Not as good as his classic My Sweet Gord, admittedly.
