On Talksport earlier. They used the obvious three players that spring to mind. Shearer, Le Tiss and Harry Kane.

All absolute class with one trophy between them......... All will rightly though for ever be regarded as legends at their 'home' clubs.

Golden boot winners, top scorers in World Cups and club top scorers.
So what's better? Does Kane have to win team medals to be regarded as a great? Does he have to move away from his boyhood team to start stocking up his trophy room? Or does he stay a one club man and break Jimmy Greaves scoring record? Le Tiss never moved and is every Soton fans legend. Shearer slightly different path nevertheless a Geordie hero.

Will or would they look back with regret?

Then for instance a Jonathan Greening sat on the bench and can show you his Champions League medal ......... (sorry JG).

Would players now settle for a 4th place PL finish over a FA Cup medal?

Ray Parlour says his team medals are worth more than any individual accolades.

Does it depend on position, era, team, nationality?

    Thoughts........

Personally, it's not about the medals but I would have wanted to play with and against the better players and under the best managers. Kane can do that plus captain England so no real need for him to move. Le Tissier of the three fared the worst because he didn't get as many chances to play for England.

I think that utter joy of winning the league or cup and to have the medal to look back on though is something you'd love to have as a player.

    Ross Turnbull
    Scott Carson
    Djimi Traore
    Jesper Blomquist
    Anderson
    Milan Baros
    Paul Lambert

    All won the champions league.

Remembered more fondly than Le Tissier or Shearer or Kane?

    I very.much doubt it.

Shearer probably wishes he'd signed for Man Utd. Kane has passed his peak and will be happy he's stayed at Tottenham as long as he has (injury prone). Le Tissier was a better player but stayed loyal and is rightly classed as a legend.

It almost certainly does depend on era, team, nationality.

Also wages, players are just looking to maximise their earnings and milk the system for as much as they can, before they finish their "careers" in their 30s and never work again

That's the state of modern football. You can play at lower league all your career and retire a millionaire now.

I've mentioned it before Robbie Williams didn't care if we won, lost or drew because he supported Liverpool and got paid every week. As long as he'd put a shift in and not dropped any ballax he wasn't bothered.

How would the above compare to Beckham? - who won honours in just about every country he played in (only Milan didn't win anything with him there), captained his country and played 115 times for England

Shearer & Tiss will always be remembered as legends as their respective clubs in years to come.
Beckham and Kane won’t due to exploits of other players.

Don't understand this negativity towards Kane, great player.

Know a few Spuds and the only reason he'd not be a club legend was if he signed for Arsenal.

Tottenham need to win a trophy for him to become a legend. Robbie Keane is a legend because he won the League Cup.

I think you are wrong about Kane there, hes going to break every goal scoring record they have, and possibly in england too, Spurs fans will rightly look to him as a legend.

Most Spurs fans I know would rather have a long overdue open top bus parade.

So if he overhauls Greaves, but Spurs fail to win owt , he'll not be a club legend?

    Nah.

Gary Lineker, Steve Perryman, Glen Hoddle, Martin Peters, Martin Chivers, Pat Jennings, Ray Clemence, Steve Archibald and Alan Mullery are club legends. Clive Allen scored shed loads of goals but he isn't classed as a legend.

Why isn't Clive Allen a legend?

Where is Lineker a club legend? Leicester, Everton, Barcelona or Spurs?

They won Division 2 while he was at Leicester (95 goals). Everton the Charity Shield (30 goals), Barcelona the Copa Del Rey and Cup Winners Cup (42 goals) and Spurs the FA Cup and Charity Shield (67 goals). No league titles anywhere.
