1 - Former Tarn physio Mick Tarmey now coaches their U15's..
2 - Colin Walker, ex-Tarn, is also there, as Head of Technical Development..
3 - The year we were sparring with Manure, Chelski, Liverpool and the massive Sh*ff Wed in the Premier League, 97-98, the Pikeys were finishing plum last in the football league and relegated to the conference with a record number of defeats - 34..

Their Chairman has had to eat humble pie,,about past statements he has made

such as we are a bigger club than Ipswich Town
He was embarrassed about the size of their crowds particularly in their first season playing at this level in over 50 years.

I'm not certain this is a fact but sure I heard recently that since Hull have now been promoted Doncaster is now the biggest place with a professional club not to have had been in the top league.

Their biggest achievement is a League One play off final and they think getting to the league Cup final after beating the reserve sides of Villa & Man City, both mediocre Premiership at the time is a great cup run.....

I could have a field day on this thread.

A mate of mine at Uni got asked to play up front for them in one game in 97-98 as they have no one available (or willing).

    Didn't believe him though...

The only thing they say regarding banter with us is "inbred, your uncles your brother, you sleep with your sister etc etc".... when the fact is travelling communities are not allowed to sleep with someone outside of their community, so in fact 78.51% of Doncaster folk are inbred and the dingles are a fictional soap family.

Oh and John Ryan's teeth are not his.

Tbf, we did have a fair few years in the Sheffield District and Midland leagues..

before our election to the football league at the turn of the 20th century.. but we have never dropped out. Unlike Doncaster, who are 2nd only to Lincoln for amount of times they have lost league status.
    .
We have played in a handful of semi-finals, and two FA Cup finals (4 if you count the replays!) Winning it of course 100 years ago thanks to Harry Tufnells 118th goal after a mazy solo-run from halfway.. ten years later, Tuffers went on to manage Midlands League side Doncaster Rovers..
    .
The Pikeys have had their own cup success though. They won the Yorkshire Electricity Cup in 1996. They won, and successfully defended the Conference Cup (98-99, 99/00)
And, they won their first MAJOR trophy when beating Bristol Rovers at the Millennium Stadium on April fools day 2007, in the JPT (Football League Trophy)
    .
Also, a year later to the day, April fools 2008, they recorded their highest Keepmoat attendance when playing against Leeds Utd.. 15,001.. the capacity is 15,251
    .
This is only their 4th spell at this level.. elected in 1901 but back out 2 years later.. re-elected 1904, but relegated a year later back to the non-league.. Their 3rd stint was from 1950 to 1958. This is generally seen as the clubs finest period, but surely they are now matching it..? Ironically, their first ever season in the league - 1901 - was their best ever finish - 7th.. only played 3 seasons in the league up until 1923.
    .
They have the honour of most wins in a season - 33 in 1946-47 - won 3rd Division North.. and also most defeats in a campaign - 34 as previously mentioned..
    .
Meanwhile, the Reds have a better EVERYTHING despite being a smaller market town..
The opening line on Donnys wikipedia page -
"..spent the majority of their history between the 3rd and 4th tiers"
The opening line on our page -
"..spent more seasons in the 2nd tier than any other club in history"
    .
Before the outbreak of WWI, the Reds were FA Cup runners up (1910) and winners (1912). When the league restarted, the 1919-20 season brought significant changes to the league. The 1st Division increased from 20 to 22 teams. The bottom team from the previous season, Spurs, were duly relegated. The first extra place went to Chelsea who retained their place despite finishing 2nd bottom in the relegation places. Derby and PNE were rightly promoted from division two which left one place to be filled. Having finished the previous seasons 2nd division in 3rd place (1914-15), Barnsley were fully expecting to take up their rightful place in the 1st division for the first time. But the league chose instead to call a ballot of the clubs. Harry Norris, then Arsenal chairman, had recently moved Woolwich Arsenal north of the Thames to Highbury and needed 1st division football to attract fans. He later admitted underhand dealings, including bribing member clubs to vote for Arsenal. They duly won the vote and we were scandalously to remain outside the top flight for 8 more decades..
    IF ONLY eh?
    YOU REDS!

I understand that pal. Im only pointing the facts out to the Pikeys reading in from their forum..
Bit of good natured banter to try hyping this NEW found rivalry.. I mean, they must be in dreamland right now to be playing us in a derby, rather than Rovrum or Scarborough!
Go and check their forum - Viking Chat - and you will see why Im at it..
