55% of his England goals have come against countries ranked below 50 in the world.
24% of his goals have come against teams ranked below 100!.
Only 12 out of his 38 goals have come against teams competing at this years World Cup, with 7 of those 12 scored against Croatia and Switzerland!
    Flat track bully indeed,

Just done some quick math and Rooney has a worse ratio than what Peter Crouch has/had for England even though he has played more games which can work in his favour or against him, depends how you look at it. I wonder what the percentages are on Crouch's 22 goals for England compared to Rooneys.

Don't need stats to see that he fails when up against the best for England. Just watching them over the years is more than enough.

He hasn't scored a tournament goal in 10 years. But if you want a player arriving injured, suspended or get sent off mid tournament - Wayne's your man!! :D

He will now! (if I've done this right)

Hey, @Hemsworth Tyke, what do you think about the stats in the OP? I am not anti-Rooney by the way, I just don't think he has anywhere near fulfilled his potential, and think his new weekly salary is nothing but obscene.

I do think he's over rated, but he isn't a one man team and has been playing alongside some rubbish.

Rooney in the qualifiers... great player. Rooney in the finals... you may as well take me. Dunno why that is. Some will say he's not that good, but I think he's good player, although no one is worth the money he's on, but that's a different argument. He just looks knackered at that time of the year. Whatever fitness regime he's using, it isn't working for him for major international competitions.

Shock! Awe! It's easier to score against weaker teams.

It's not much ammo, if you recall that goal. Wasn't it a tap in after somebody else's good work? His performances were poor.

I think he is a good player. Along with 100s of other players world wide. That level of good. Nowhere near the top 20 or so that are just behind the top 2. He is made out to be our great hope whereas for me he should be considered in the same vein as Sturridge, Welbeck, Lambert etc. If any of those perform as badly they drop out of the line up, especially if another player does the business, but it's not the same for Rooney. He seems immune, as proved by the rush to get him back in the side in 2012 after his ban (again). I honestly can't think of a singler reason why he starts for England anymore. We seem to function better as a team without him, I am convinced his presence has a negative effect on the psychology of the squad.

Can you also confirm what % of games he has played against the countries in each bracket. Context makes it much easier to make sense of the statistics.

Yeh the stats in OP are a good example of numbers being used to fit one side of an argument rather than actually proving anything.

45% of his goals have come against teams in the top 50. You could argue this is high, bearing in mind it should be easier to score against weaker teams. As Scoff says, you also need to take into account the % of games he's played against weaker opposition. I don't know this stat but it's required to make any assumptions from your data.

The important and worrying issue is his performance in major tournaments. I think Rooney is a fantastic player, his goal record for Man Utd is almost 1 in 2. That's pretty impressive when goal-scoring is only part of what he offers. The problem is we haven't seen this side of Wayne Rooney in major tournaments but we also haven't really seen that side of many English players in recent tournaments.

Providing he's not injured, Rooney is going to the world cup and we'd be mad not to take him. The England coaching staff need to work out how to get the best out of him. Whether that be rotating him with Sturridge, using him as an impact sub, changing his training methods or having him work with a sports psychologist, I don't know.

Our team isn't world class but there's definitely some talent in there. It's in the interest of everyone who wants to see England do well to get these group of players working together and to the best of their ability. In my opinion, looking at it this way is far more interesting and productive than just moaning, abusing players and starting twiter campaigns to stop them from going to Brazil.

On the other hand, we could just drop the fat, pasty, overpaid,wig-wearing, freckle faced, granny-shagging ball bag and take Chris O'Grady.
