i did 20 years in the pit and if they hadnt shut them i'd still be there now,i enjoyed it and enjoyed working with the lads.Pits saw huge investment from the eighties onwards and were a far cry from pits even in the 1960's,coal miners have some of the highest paid working class jobs in the world and its a shame we havnt got any left.

My Dad worked at Woolley as a shot firer before leaving and working at Shaw Carpets. One of his brothers was an electrician at Woolley, and another brother was Personnel Manager at Barnsley Main. The latter let me go underground, crawling through a 4' high seam. Hats off to all who worked in those conditions. Their father, my granddad, died of pneumoconiosis sadly.

Coming from mining stock myself (and having spent nearly 20 years in the industry as a 'pen pusher' as my dad said) I really enjoyed that.

I've taken the kids & grandkids to the mining museum at Caphouse, but the underground trip there was does not capture the 'real life' aspect of a pit. The kids got really scared a couple of times - once when the cage started its descent and secondly when the guide asked us to turn all our lights out - absolute darkness - could not see hand in front of face darkness.

I think everyone ought to experience a trip down a proper working mine - then compare it to their own job........

    a) When I went to the grammar school we weren't offered such a trip.......
    b) I worked briefly at Manvers Main
