people find it ok to have a pop at the Police - Pigs, thick plods etc to name but a few of the posts earlier in realation to the Police. This is akin to racism:

Stereotyping a group of individuals just because of where they work and how a minority of those individuals might behave, a similar analogy to racism. It is easy to have a pop when it is a faceless group but why do we always report to name calling and irrational sweeping statements?

There is no argument in saying that the word 'Paki' is a derivative of the name for people from Pakistan as it is common knowledge that it is used as an offensive term and invariably applied to all Asians whether they are from Pakistan or not.

How can this mind set be changed? I don't think it can. Even with changes in the law and apparent changes in society there will always be racist views - it may just be that they becom less vocal. Discuss!

I have had Asian friends who have told me they are Pakis and an Indian mate of mine kept reminding me that he was born in the jungle.

Incidently, my Indian and Pakistani friends did not mix. They hated one another, except for a muslim girl who was chastised by her fellow muslims for being friends with an Hindu.

The chineese have a racist comment about Europeans which roughly translated means " white round faces", the Japs, sorry the Japaneese, appart from physically abusing our boys in WWII, refer to us as being "smelly/stinky".

Im a Brit am I being racist to call myself that.
I dont think so, its only a shortend version of British.

You wont get different races getting on until there is no religon to get in the way.

Im sick of people who pretend racism is purely a British phenomenon.
Every race is racist to some degree thats why races exist in the first place.

I agree with you on the points about religion - it is the root of many of the problems in society oday, but religion is an invention of people in power to use as a tool to control the masses - and it works! I also agree that racism is not a British problem but a global one. I have experienced the racism that occurs between blacks and Asians and despise the way that women are treated in certain 'religions' or cultures.

I am not disputing the fact that people who are born in Pakistan may call themselves Paki's as we call ourselves Brits but do you not agree that it is mainly used as a derogatory term for all Asians? Hence the racist chanting at most football grounds.

I appreciate your post but fail to see the relevance of how the Japanese treated our troops in WW2 relevant. A hideous, horrific crime was committed then, no dispute, but many many other cultures/ races are also guilty of this. To some extent even us Brits in many a historical conflict.

    Thanks for the reply,
    Chris

Did you intend it to be racist? How did your mate react to it and how do you think that would be perceived by people around you? Do you think other asian people would react in the same way as your mate.

I think my point is that ithas historically been used as a derogatory term - and is still being used as such. Would you use the n word to describe a black person? I think this word has derived from a country in Africa but has been used so vociferously in hate crimes that it is now taboo, yet it seems alright for American black musicians to use it as they 'own' it.

My rather long and rambling point seems to be that I personally would find it offensive to hear someone chanting 'You're just a town full of Paki's' at a football match. yes it possibly does represent what the majority of society thinks and feels but that doesn't nake it right! - i think!

now i'm a brit, and if a paki calls me a 'thick brit' i wouldnt be offended.
and if i called a paki 'a thick paki', then i'm sure he wouldn't be offended.

but if i called a paki a f***ing wa**er (no racial undertone) he would be offended, and quite rightly so.

just the same as if he called me the same.

but you can bet your arse that if some goody goody was listening they would make a racial situation out of it.

you see it's not what you say it's the way you say it.....
