Antivirus is just that. Its sole aims are to prevent viruses getting onto your PC, and to detect and eliminate those that do.

However, there are more threats than just viruses. With respect to computers, the term Virus has a fairly strict definition. Anything which threatens your computer's security but does not fit in with this definition may not be eliminated by antivirus software.

These threats comprise such things as hackers trying to extract data from your machine, malicious software such as adware and spyware and so on. Most antivirus providers offer a full security suite which comprises antivirus + firewall + antispyware +/- ID theft prevention tools.

You can get separate software for all these things and it can all be done for free if you so wish. However, you will need more than antivirus alone on a Windows installation.

When I used windows I used AVG Free antivirus, Comodo Personal Firewall and Spybot Search and Destroy.
Google will find them all and they're all free. The downside is you get no support with the free ones.
