Same thing has happened to mine twice. Both times I just left it for a few days to completely run down, then re-charged it and it was fine.

RE: Every piece of electronic equipment your right i know, just i pods are in my experience more likely to have problems than others.
if i remember right, you hold down the menu button for a few seconds and it resets. If not try the other buttons.
latest apple software first make sure you have the latest itunes software download from apple on your computer .. mine is relatively up to date and is version 7.0.2.16 (you can find what version you have by going to the itunes tool bar and "help" and then "about itunes" .. second when you synch (connect) your ipod it will determine whether yours is the latest software (there have been several very useful upgrades for most version of ipod from nano thru to video) third if the software can be upgraded then accept the upgrade that should cure the bugs and reset your pod .. fourth if the software update cant be accepted chose the second onscreen option which is "restore" this will wipe the ipod clean and reload the factory settings to as it was when you first bought it .. of course this means you will have to then resynch with your pc to load the ipod with music again from scratch this can be time consuming and tedious i have 5000 tunes on mine and it takes an age to reload .. but i had to do it when my own ipod seized up before christmas and its still working fine at the moment there are 2 other things you can try first like one of the guys has already said allow the ipod to run fuly down and then recharge it or there is a quick fix reset which cures many lock ups .. on some (earlier) click wheel ipods you have to hold down the centre button and the stop button together for about 5 seconds but on the latest generation video ipods you hold the centre button and the menu button together for about 5 seconds duration in many cases this will clear the fault but if these quick fixes dont work you will have to go down the route of wiping the ipod totally clean
My nano stalls all the time, i have to hold the menu and centre button down at the same time for about 10 seconds then the screen resets
I think it's menu and centre together to reset, if you don't want to wait for the battery to run down.
