The Owls are believed to have offered £1.5m for 21-year-old Sharp.

"Sheffield Wednesday have made a bid and we have turned it down," said Scnuthorpe boss Nigel Adkins.

"There is going to be a lot of speculation throughout the summer about Billy as he is a hot property. He is our player and we want him to stay."

Sharp has been with Scnuthorpe since joining in August 2005 from Sheffield United for a fee of £100,000.

Adkins added: "We have spoken to his agent and both he and Billy are well aware that we want him to stay.

"It is going to be a long summer, it is still early days, and the scenario is that this situation will run and run for the length of the summer.

"But Billy Sharp will not leave unless there is a move that is right for him and Scnuthorpe United are reimbursed accordingly."
