Scored at Fratton Park... apparently his dad was on our books from '82 as a goalkeeper. Were they related to Roy (?) From the the 60's at a guess ?
There was an Ian Ironside on Barnsley’s books from 82 to 87. The Cambridge lad is his son. Don’t remember if there was a relationship between Roy and Ian but Ian was a goalkeeper. So mebbies.
Roy Ironside was our keeper in the 67/68 promotion side. I watched every home game and plenty of aways during that season. Roy was a good keeper; he made the occasional gaffe but was an integral part of the side. I remember he had a lad who went into the pro game, and suspect his grandson may have followed. It's an unusual (and terrific name), so its hard to think the scorer today isn't related...
Remember Yorkshire TV highlights one sunday afternoon after Roy had made a spectacular gaffe when he allowed a slow rolling ball to go through his hands and into the net. Keith Macklin interviewed him which they showed in the highlights and mentioned it to which ROY responded in broad Barnsley with "...well Keith, tha nos,..... even't best keepers mek mistakes sometimes"...(at least that is how I remember him) After that I always referred to him as 'Roy Cyanide' (a bit harsh since on his day I think he was a decent keeper)
That would have been the 2-2 draw with Tranmere. It was a shocker but he played over a hundred times for us and was a decent keeper. He would have played more but for Brian Arblaster. Roy came to us from Rotherham who were two divisions above us in those days. according to Wikipedia he’s still alive
Me & my mates used to call him the " Cat " lovingly of course ,but I remember him going through a bad patch & then we went to Plymouth away & drew 0-0 & he won us a point single handed , he pulled off worldy after worldy & we couldn"t believe what we had seen ,but that was the Cat , shocking one week & outstanding the next .
Yes that was Kendraytyke who runs the BFC video archive. He’s posted that one a couple of times, not just here. It’s top quality video, really sharp picture because it’s from an original YTV broadcast. I wish there were more available of that quality- its great to see the likes of Eddie Loyden, Johnny Evans and Jimmy Robson, and the Winstanley/Howard defence of course. I wish there was video of Barrie Thomas banging them in for us when he first arrived. I’d especially love to see that FACup First Round victory over Southport who were top of the league at the time with big Jim Fryatt at number nine for them.
