Heard on radio today that he retired aged 50 in 1965. Different era I know but playing professional football up to the age of 50 is some achievement by anybodys standards.

Id be interested to know what type of player he was at the end of his career bearing in mind how much we make today of players legs going when they pass thirty.

Can anyone remember anyone slating him for being too old???

  2. Doubt if anyone ever had a bad word about him

I remember being aware of him still playing and being amazed that somebody aged 50 could still be playing professional football. Sadly I never got to see him play though. He was something of a national treasure though and it would be interesting to hear if the Port Vale fans respected him (even though he played for Stoke) or if Lancastrian club fans (Preston, Burnley etc) ever abused him when he was a Blackpool man. These were different times though so I would doubt it very much
