Thinking about renewing. Mostly for the interviews and extended match highlights. Do the match highlights have any commentary, now our two lads have been ditched?? TIA.. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
its good value ,if you like listening to L J ,with his wonderful made up sayings, the only good thing is the 11 mins h d ,match highlights ,slightly spoilt by the commentry being overlayed when you know the lad doing it knew the result and is just reading a script, the full match replay have no commentry ,but at least that lets you hear all the swearing from the benches of each team as they encourage their teams , the player interviews of players average 1 a week, usual questions, the match day commentary from BBC R S, is shocking ,the best thing to improve attendance since the meal deal, those 10p savings add up you know
Judging by some of the posts from subscribers on here I think the general opinion is that it's a right load of ***** these days.
Just to even thngs up a bit... Nowt at wrong wi it (except if the game is on FM on Sheffield) plenty of good stuff.
Cheers. Think I'll give it a month then get a year if it's any good. Thanks Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I considered getting rid when they replaced our own commentary team with Radio Sheffield but to be honest although it's not as good I don't mind the radio Sheffield commentary. Can't really afford to do many away games for the next season or two so it's valuable to me
The commentary on the highlights is supplied by the football league I think. It's the same guy for every game I think. And to call it commentary is probably a stretch too far. He basically summarises on the game based on the highlights he's watching. For example he'll say that Barnsley are on the attack, and Barnsley are on top if they've had 3 highlights in a row. He only says the names of players if they score. The match day commentary is exactly that, a commentary of the match itself. Adam Oxley commentates on the game. He doesn't offer the same emotion or analysis as the Barnsley player lads used to, but he does what he's paid to do, for which I can't fault him. People's gripe comes from when the game is on FM on Radio Sheffield (about once a month) where the commentary is constantly interrupted by updates from the other South Yorkshire (and Chesterfield) games. Again it doesn't really bother me as they generally choose the right moments to go elsewhere. Another criticism has been the lack of halftime analysis (again unless the game is on FM), however I don't understand this criticism as it used to be complete silence prior to this season. The commentary comes back on immediatly as the game restarts, even if there's the odd minute or so of the FM commentary whilst they're waiting for our game to restart. There's obviously the 3 or so pre match interviews with Lee and usually 2 other players, and the same 3 or so post match ones. On the whole I reckon it's excellent value for money. 12 minutes of highlights, 6 or so interviews, usually full match replays, and ever so slightly biased commentary. Thanks Archey, that's helpful. TBH i'm not ar$ed about match day commentary at all. I didn't listen to it when our lads used to do it. It's the interviews and highlights that I watched.
Apart from the comment about the updates from other grounds, I find the commentary to be better than the previous regime as it is more neutral. Overall its a definite improvement on the service previously provided.
It's pretty rubbish. The commentary isn't the best (cut aways to other games, just one guy talking so you don't get the flow of conversation the same as when there were two, having to guess whether we have scored or not as he doesn't actually say it for a few seconds, missing the start of each half when it starts late etc.) No commentary on full match replays and an annoying guy (can't really change that as not done by BFC) on the highlights. The quality of the vidoes is much higher now although it sometimes takes a while to buffer on my laptop, I'd like an option for lower quality when it struggles at times. I don't watch the interviews usually as they don't interest me. Saying all that, you do get extended highlights (11mins), full match replays, player/manager interviews and guaranteed commentary so it is worth the money, it's just nowhere near as good as it used to be.
Adam Oxley is a nice bloke and a good commentator. The BBC should be investigated by the monopolies commission (if they still exist). BFC were underhand with their BBCRS negotiations behind our backs. Disgraceful way to treat people. I don't care if people think I'm bitter. I'll rant on about this until I receive a formal apology and a thank you for 19 year's service. As the son of a proud miner I'll always make a stand against injustice. Otherwise Barnsley Player is still an excellent service. Not that I have a subscription anymore.
I think it is very good, but then I am new to it this year and can't compare to previous years. Football is of course hugely overpriced, so if you can watch full match replays home and away and see extended highlights and get live commentary for 40-odd quid, I think it is a very good deal...especially if, like me, you live 200 miles from Barnsley and are not a season ticket holder. I don't get to listen to Radio Sheffield so it doesn't matter to me where the commentary comes from. I don't have any buffering issues with the highlights either. So can't really complain.
No commentary on the full matches which does make them a bit dull, not that I've been compelled to watch any this season. Adam Oxley does his best on the commentary's to say he's on his own, he does sound a bit bored sometimes, picks himself up a bit when he's doing the summaries live for Radio Sheffield (although it is a different commentator today), much preferred it when it was Matt and Adam with our former players summarising, I don't think there have been any since the change but I could be wrong. Generally worth the money though for the full pre/post match interviews rather than the edited down ones you get on Radio Sheff.
The Player sub is good value for me because r lass needs it for Derby games she can't get to, and they put a shitload of content on it, every other day. The commentary is BBC Radio Derby though. It's a national thing I'm afraid. Huddersfield had BBC Radio Leeds doing theirs. It seems our way (up until this year and jumping on the bandwagon) was fairly unique, having two supporters doing the comms. Still unsure as to how the beeb or the clubs can get away with charging you for a commentary you've already paid for through the license fee, and, commentaries that are illegal to listen to online. I'm guessing their must be a loophole seeing as, like I say, most clubs now have BBC comms on their Player service. Matt's a good friend. He's bitter. He's every right to be.
BFC needed Adam & myself in 2008 after Oakwell AM had folded due to mismanagement. They had fallen out with RS and banned them from broadcasting from Oakwell as I recall, now they have a strong relationship because the BBC have put more money on the table in a bid to regain listeners. Like you say pal the way the club went about things has left a very sour taste and I'll never let the present regime forget that fact.
Good lad. You fancy the 23rd, Rochdale game? You don't have to come to the game, but a few drinks in tarn?
Only freebies are the tickets and parking at the iPro. I might be tight from Barnsley but don't think a Player sub's going to bankrupt us.
