Apparently the Govt stopped the spend on Flood protection in the area in order to help boost the funds for the war in Iraq.(NOOO)
Better defences would have given more time to evacuate. Still I am not one for artificial protection as it just moves the problem elsewhere.
but (and this is purely an uninformed guess) wouldnt a 'suitable' (obviously not in hindsight) defence system have already been built? I measn the levees were already there and everything, im not sure what else they could have done
RE: but (and this is purely an uninformed guess) The levees need to be maintained as the ground there is continuously sinking. Apparently the money wasn't available to do this properly.
Did this hurricane originate in Cuba? Time to bomb them as well then I guess! Had an email from a pal in the States who is a Democrat but says the "left" aren't doing themselves any favours at the moment by trying to make political capital. The NY Times had a particularly scathing article against Bush
"George W Bush gave one of the worst speeches of his life yesterday," says the New York Times in an editorial. "He advised the public that anybody who wanted to help should send cash, grinned, and promised that everything would work out in the end. "And nothing about the president's demeanour yesterday - which seemed casual to the point of carelessness - suggested that he understood the depth of the current crisis." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4204292.stm
RE: but (and this is purely an uninformed guess) Sky were reporting last night that they have learned that the US Army, who originally built the levee's around New Orleans were warning months ago that some of the levee's had 'settled' (ie sunk) and a big event would cause them to breach. There are reports that the State government removed funding for the Iraq war, but its also been said that they took back funds which had been given to flood defence but hadn't been spent.
Of course the hurricane itself isn't. After 9/11 the US Govt did a study of which places in the US would be most affected by natural disasters. New Orleans being hit by a hurricane was in the top three. The report recommended the effects of the storm could be minimised by building up the levees. The Govt refused to provide funding to do this work. So yes, in a way the Govt is responsible for some of the consequences. Go on, be sarky or ignore that.
And of course the levees would have stopped the effects of a minor breeze like Katrina easy. I heard a recommendation that everyone stand waving newspapers at it was also ignored.
Bush's Press Conference was a disgrace He spent about a minute explaining how little they were doing for the people on the Gulf Coast who were stranded without food and water. The next five minutes plus were spent explaining the extremes they were going to in order make sure that the fuel prices stayed low. Presumably he found a topic he knew something about.
RE: Bush's Press Conference was a disgrace You cant blame Bush directly for what happened, although the federal government has some questions to answer. However the operation to evacuate people and then rescue people is quite clearly shambolic. Earlier in the month a typhoon headed for China. The city evacuated 1.25 million people to safety. If China can do it, why cant the US? Have a read at some of these pleas from people stuck in hospitals and coleges. Its heartbreaking and truly awful http://www.nola.com/weblogs/nola/
