The discs that im using say "4.7Gb/120mins". Does that mean I cant get more than 120mins on the disc, no matter what quality I record in?
You need "DVD Shrink" or something similar me lad http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download.asp?fid=23009&fileidx=1 no longer available from the original site (probably scared off or paid off)
Most pre-recorded DVDs are DVD-9 (dual layer) and a 4.7GB DVD-R is DVD-5 (single layer) although Dual-layer recordables (8.5GB) are getting more widespread.
Use DVD shrink to remove the decryption and compress the pre-recorded disc to fit on a DVD-R.
Reight program.

If you can get hold of DVD shrink, try and get hold of DVD Decrpter to rip the DVD to your hard drive, then CLONE DVD to compress it to fit. (Slight loss of picture quality).
I think you 3 are all missing what im getting at here. I have a DVD recorder. I tape films off tv. VHS tapes can take many films in long play, and still maybe 2 in short play. Can I do the same using my dvd recorder? The dvd's i have say "4.7Gb/120mins". Does this mean I can only record 120mins of dvd material whatever quality i select? Or in long play could i get maybe 180 hours of playback?
you can get more cain i think the time is merely a guide as to how long you get for an average dvd quality film. ive got dvd's with three films on them.
RE: you can get more cain There should be settings on the DVD recorder. 60, 90, 120, 180 and 240 minutes. The longer the time, the lesser the quality (though even at 240 mins, it's still better than VHS). Optimum quality is around 120 minutes, though 60 and 90 mins are for very high quality sources.
