Is it just me - that can see that a strategy has been formed by the manager and the board of directors to bring in YOUNG talented players from other clubs and mix these with YOUNG players from the academy that will start to build a team for maybe next season or even the season after that. There has been another big turn around of players in January - these YOUNG players are going to take time to mature into a slick outfit. So in the short term we are going to lose more matches than we win - But its interesting to watch the team growing. In other words - GIVE IT TIME
I think you have a POINT with what you say. Also I think Everest has a POINT and when a pencil is sharpened it also has a POINT.
I can see what he is doing with youth. Question is, is it working? Unless I'm mistaken my expectation of rebuilding was to see a young side develop into a team challenging for promotion. I expected us to be more competitive and entertaining through the process in L1 than we were in the championship. So far we haven't added enough experience to help the kids learn putting them under more pressure, we aren't entertaining and we aren't competetive. I can give loads of time to enable us winning anything (after all being a barnsley supporter for 45+ year you get used to it). What I can't accept is that we are in complete decline right now. Development and progression is about gradually getting better. We are getting worse.
Didn't go to the Donny match because I've been away all week. But surely people on here can see whats happening at the club and what the strategy is. A good example would be Holgate. If we brought older players into the club and they dominated places in the first team then players like Holgate would not get a chance in the first team. But with the present system Holgate is being thrown in there and it looks like we have now got another good young player on the books. But that player needs time to learn and develop and so consequently there will be times when he does rash things and gets sent off. There are only 11 places in a football team - we cannot fill those places with mature players and still be able to bring promising youngsters through. What happened in the Championship is that we were constantly under the threat of relegation so young players at that time were not given much of a chance. This restricted the development of players such as Rose, Digby and Lasurus - who in my opinion would all be playing in the first team at Barnsley now if there had been different circumstances at the club.
Top post. However, building a young side capable of challenging takes time. It's desperately frustrating seeing a team that loses every other week to some of the dross down here, but the chances of it all coming together in just over half a season is slim. I think if we can go on a decent run towards the end of the season and keep our better players in the summer, it will happen for us next season. Easier said than done though, given we've only been on a "decent run" once in about the last 3 seasons.
I can clearly see PART of the strategy, which is to base the squad on a foundation of youth. However that is only one part. It takes more than that to build success. We have heard of players turning up late and showing lax training commitment, drinking over holidays etc, so is the culture being developed to a strategy. We have seen us play 4-4-2. 3-5-1-1, 4-3-3, 4-5-1 and still various formation changes. We have seen extremely young sides with in and out performances of several academy lads, we have seen the majority of the experienced players only on the fringes and not really work. We have flooded some positions in the squad I.e. Midfield and leave others I.e. RB/LB weak. So I get the basis of youth, but instead of assuming we can all see the strategy, please enlighten me, excluding the youth element, what our strategy is from your perspective.

Not been funny mate but do you honestly think that's a good enough excuse for yesterday's performance and our league position . If we go to league 2 you can forget about building anything 6000 fans in a 23000 seater stadium will be very depressing next season Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
if you're right re. strategy I'd say it's flawed. Young players don't bring other young players on. One young player isn't really concerned about 'bringing on' another young player, they haven't the maturity to do that. What we're lacking is a steady maturing influence in the team. Re Mario's comment about short term pain -- we can accept short term pain if we have confidence that it is going to be short term. I have seen nothing to convince me it's short term. We are being conned into believing that it will be 'jam tomorrow!'
