is the tour de france really the biggest annual sporting event in the world?

    They claim to have 3.5 billion tv viewers but that is surely ******** isnt it? I doubt there are 3.5billion tv owners in the world

    But dont forget areas in countries where there might be a black and white TV and the whole village is surrounding it.

    How they count them though I've no idea

    I don't think everyone sits on their own watching their own personal tv though. They probably count 4 people for every household.

    They'll count exactly what is registered for that household won't there? Be on that government form or where you're registered for tax (or the equivalent in other countries)?

    I just checked and the figure i saw agree with 80%. There are 7billion people in the world meaning 5.6billion with a tv.
    That means that 62.5% of people with a tv watch the tour de france which frankly is ******** isnt it?
    In 2012 the uk viewing figures were on average just 382 thousand vieweers according to itv which isnt even 1% of the population. Now considering the tour de france is only aired in half of the worlds countries I dont see how their claims are even possible.

    Well I do. Theyre using the same theory that says that says 190000 home fans went to oakwell last season because apparently i am 23 people.

    They have a panel of people made up of different demographics and household sizes who record what they watch so viewing figures tend to be accurate to how many people are watching. For example if their panel shows that single men watch babestation but families dont then their calculatiins reflect this.

    It's probably combined viewing figures across all the days - so basically someone watching it every day for 2 weeks will get counted 14 times.
