Because we're 3rd on the basis of number of golds, but we've only won 33 medals overall, Russia have won 42 medals yet are3 places below us in the table. If there were 3 points for a gold, 2 for a silver, and 1 for a bronze we would be in 4th place. It seems bizarre that the number of golds would take precedent over amore evenpoints sytem - don't get me worng i'm not knocking us for being in 3rd place, It's great, i'm just curious how / why it works like it does.
Been wondering that myself, from what I can work out... ...the medal table is based on golds only. Silver and Bronze only seem to come into play when teams have the same number of golds.
Could be wrong but looking at the table thats seems to be how it works.

Thats exactly how it works So if you won 15 silver and 20 bronze you still finish up behind someone with only one medal if its gold
Not if you're American it doesn't. When you won more medals overall! http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/olympics/2008/medals/tracker/?cnn=yes
Pffffft Bet they soon change back to the way everyone else does it if theysuddenly find that puts them higher up the table
RE: Been wondering that myself, from what I can work out... If only the Championship was based on the number of red cards...or penalties given away...or injuries...or perfectly fit and eligible players that spend their Saturday afternoons watching jeff Stelling cos they've fallen out with the manager...or wingers at the club...etc
