A lot of players/managers who move on to play for or manage other clubs don't seem to do as well as they did whilst at Barnsley??
Yes it's fair. There are a few players who went on to better things but I can't think of any Managers
Vaz Te the exception that proves the rule in recent years. Ask McIndoe, Hammill, Howard, Butterfield or Shackell. Seems to be a problem of no longer being a big fish.
the barnsley ethic is about being part of a unit. always has been. individuals often break out of that, often understandably so, but then get exposed for being...well...actually not as good as they thought
redfearn was hated at charlton i believe, he was played as a wide midfielder believe it or not for most of his time there and as you can imagine wasn't too successful
In the main I think you're right. Thinking back big money moves like currie, tiler and Agnew all struggled away from Oakwell. I think there are a few successes though, John beresford and David Hirst being two that spring to mind.
Shackell is in same position if you ask me. Lot of presumptions that those who look to have failed would not have done so here eventually.
Mick McCarthy He did ok. Others that come to mind in my time:- David Hirst Arian de Zeeuw Neil Redfearn Clive Baker David Speedie John Beresford Heinz Muller Andy Rhodes Gerry Taggart Going back a bit further Stuart Barrowclough Pat Howard Tommy Taylor Danny Blanchflour George Robledo
Re: Mick McCarthy Shackell simply keeps totting up £million transfers....I believe he and his agent are very contented...
Re: Mick McCarthy Thats my point though all players and not that many in 25 + years (OK McCarthy went on to become a sucessful manager but he never managed us)
Hammill, Butterfield, Bogdanovic, Campbell-Ryce, Colace, Anderson, McIndoe, Nardiello, Howard, Shackell, Barnard, Davies etc etc etc Ward did well financially drumming up transfer fees but not football wise, Drinkwater did alright to stay in the Leicester squad but I've seen plenty of people on their forums saying hes not good enough for them this year and I can't see him remaining there if they end up in the prem this season, so that leaves us with Muller who as I understand it did well after leaving us in the german league. That's 2 players I can think of who have done well career wise after leaving us thinking they were bigger than the club, wish we could show that list to the current players perhaps with pictures of all the aforementioned getting neck ache watching Sheff U from the bench/ begging to come back on twitter (Colace) / going into non league league obscurity.
It was interesting listening to Bobby Hassell A few weeks back at the Supporters Trust. He repeated what he said at the Lamproom in November, that he'd had the chance to sign for Leeds United & Sheffield Wednesday in the past. Both moves would've meant him receiving a substantially higher salary. However, he loves the club, town and is happy & content here. He isn't influenced by money. He raised the question why players in our recent history left Barnsley (playing in the first team regularly and receiving a decent wage) for more money, but playing far less at their new clubs. His point was you can't put a price on happiness and playing on a regular basis.
Re: It was interesting listening to Bobby Hassell Refreshing to hear from a professional footballer. What a man he is.
Bogdanovic, JCR, Colace, Anderson, McIndoe, Nardiello, and Shackell were never going to do much once the left us, in my opinion. All average laikers at this level, sometimes special, sometimes *****. So nowt surprising. Howard I expected to go on and do well for himself, but he chose the wrong club in the Blunts, who bypassed him in midfield with hoofball. Did ok initially at Reading but basically his career ended when he left Oakwell. Shame, as he was one of the best talents I've seen in my time as a red. I fully expected Hammill to get more chances than he did, at Wolves. But he fell out with McCarthy and he's got notorious attitude problems off the pitch. But he's still young and has bags of talent. It's up to him though. Butterfield - I'm saying nowt for obvious reasons. Davies again is too early to judge. Don't understand why you included Barnard.
