a member of the family has been laid off work at 58 yrs old, was earning 20,000 grand a year, no redundancy. his wife earns £12,000 in a clerical job. his job prospects are slim to none and slim has left town.

they have a mortgage, car loans, bank loans etc etc that comes with having a large family and numerous grand kids, most have another 7 years to run.

he is in receipt of a very small pension from a previous employer, which is less that £80 per month.

he has been to seek help at the dss / job centre and they have told him, under the circumstances, he can have help from the government of...........£2 per week!!!! ffs, it costs that in parking to go and sign on.

is there anything else we can do?

he has worked none stop since he was 17 year old, how can that be right.

it seems unfair that if you tip up in barnsley / england homeless or without papers, you seem to be provided with a home and benefits.

it just doesnt seem right to me.

    thoughts anyone?

    :'(

my dad is a self taught plumber since he left school

he had to do corgi, but lost his job last year.
the woman at the dole office says he has to find anything even if it means cleaning toilets, he's 64.
otherwise they will stop his benefits

cant agree more pal. thousands who have never worked and wont work, ever, who get houses, cars etc etc, andthen low and behold, work on the side for 50 quid a day cash in hand. priceless.

i appealed my redundancy saying i was singled out by the construction director

the firm is busy again. my site manager wants me back, my contracts manager wants me back, but the director won't have me, so i'm being stopped going back where i spent nearly 17 years because of 1 man.

self employed tends to translate to screwed if laid off, Only real option of any kind of dispute is if broken any contract ie completion or sole contractor.

A similar thing happened to my dad when he got ill. Had paid in all his life from 16 - mid 50's then got ill and after his sick pay had stopped he was entitled to sweet FA in benefits. Yet there were scroats who hadn't worked a day in their lives (British born and immigrants) getting more. Makes my blood boil. This country really is on its arse.

He's 58, worked all his life and he's made no provisions for this sort of thing?

    Pension plan, savings?

I'd be planning to retire by 55, I've been making sure I have the gelt to do so as well.

I'm guessing this is the reason he's only being offered £2 a week. That and his missus is earning too much.

How long was he working for the employer that laid him off - Should be entitled to some redundo payout. Unless he got sacked or didn't have a contract.

someone I knew spunked thousands credit cards, holidays, plasma tvs, laptops, clothes etc, got a loan from Ocean Finance to pay them off.

Couldnt afford the repayments, went bankrupt had their home reposessed now has a nice 3 bedroomed council house and goes out for beer and curries 3 times a week withe the mortgage savings.

I have worked since I was 16 and when I spilt with my ex asked for a council house was told ten year wait minimum.

Dont you just love this country...if you dont play the system you wont win...

i'm guessing they have significant savings?

not sure what the limit is but I know that if you have savings it limits the amount of money you can claim
