They talk about money like its nothing!!! They signed this player for x - million They signed that player for x -million
They discussed this on radio Sheffield tonight and Rob was absolutely spot on with everything he said.
To summarise they were very critical of the top clubs and football in general in respect of the countless millions they spend on transfer fees, often on bang average players. They commented that media outlets like sky gave headline figures and overall spending like it was something to celebrate where in reality it was obscene and something to be embarrassed about. They made comments about a total lack of reality in the game.
Shane Warne was saying something about hoping to raise $20m for his foundation which helps terminally ill kids amongst other things. Then flicked over and De Bruyne is signing for £50 odd million, Martial is signing for £36m rising to £50 odd million. Obscene figures. The deadline day has become some kind of Hollywood style farce with that huge totaliser (just the £880m spent this summer). No wonder so many people are losing interest in top level football.
First person I saw talking with a similar viewpoint was David Preece on Twitter yesterday. The running total being celebrated like its a Children In Need or Red Nose Day target or donation, when in fact it's sickening that it continues to get bigger year on year.
They'd not have been saying anything of the sort had Wendy spent £150million in the window. It'd have just been a case of: that's modern football, and that's what you need to do to compete these days.
It's a great point and one I think Andy Giddings repeated. He also pointed out that we quite rightly applaud the totals on comic relief and children in need and their totals are a fraction of what football spends on transfers alone.
I don't believe that's true. Andy and Rob were quite passionate and sincere in their condemnation of the money spent.
I think I'd be right in saying Kevin De Bryne (or however you spell it) cost more than the usual Comic Relief or Children In Need total? Yet Jim White and SSN are giving you a dramatic update every hour almost hoping that clubs spend more than whatever was spent in the last window.
I rang in the other day, and pointed out that we were seen as perennial strugglers for 8 seasons and seen by many as a sort of failure, yet they were praising Rotherham for surviving (which of course is an achievement) Whilst I accept that there wasn't a report published like the recently published Championship one, The same principles applied in that we were competing with one of the lowest budgets in the league.
That report underlines just what is wrong with football. The second tier of English football and there is eye watering debt. It's sickening to see what football has become.
I remember a Del Amitri song having the line 'American businessmen snap up Van Gogh's for the price of an Hospital wing'....insert The words Chairmen and footballers in place of American businessmen and Van Gogh and it really does sum up how obscene it is now
Nothing ever happens - a great song. You're right though, the lyrics fit football perfectly and its only likely to get worse.
It's embarrassing. Bragging about how much money teams in our league are spending when as a country we're finishing below Costa Rica in a World Cup group & getting knocked out after 2 games.
Ahh but it's OK cos its only allTV money they are spending now that they have stopped subsidising the ludicrous fees and wages by ripping off ordinary fans for ridiculous ticket prices, exorbitant food prices and souvenirs etc.....................................ohhh err wait a minute!
But nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all, the needle returns to the start of the song and we all sing along like before! Apt indeed!
