My girlfriend is wanting to get the internet over summer before she's back at uni, but doesnt want a 12 month contract. Does anyone know any options she has + how much they would cost Thanks all Jay
Virgin do a monthly contract so do Zen As do Zen (though they are a bit pricey.) We just signed up to the Virgin one at my Mother in Laws so we can go and work down there whilst she is ill and it seems OK We are on the 6G download one but for general use and surfing the cheaper 3G one is probably fine - unless planning to download movies etc http://www.virgin.net/internetaccess/ Zen are probably the best ISP in terms of reliability and customer service - but you have to pay a bit more - we use them at work and cant fault them. http://www.zenbroadband.com/athome.aspx
Virgin will be fine But, double check the T&C's or ring them. Broadband activation is £50+VAT, which the ISP stand for you. However, most of the companies who do monthly contracts stipulate that if you cancel within so many weeks, you'll be billed for the activation. Also, they throw in a "starter kit" (USB broadband modem and microfilters) for free. Many companies who throw in free stuff charge a "recovery fee" for their equipment when you cancel. This can be as much as £20. You can buy an ADSL kit of your own for £11 delivered, from Dabs.com. So just watch yourself and make sure you don't end up paying more than you need to.
Alternatively There's the TalkTalk £21/month phone package which includes free alllocal, national and most international calls, plus broadband. There is a setup fee (and a long lead time at the moment) but it would mean whenever she's back from uni it'd be there for probs not much more per month than usual BT bill.
RE: theres no contract with orange dial but There's no such thing as free broadband. You are getting it as part of a package which you will pay for.
The Talk Talk offer is an 18 month contract and there are plenty of hidden charges so be very, very careful if you switch ISPs to go to Talk Talk. Read the terms and conditions very carefully. Sit down and work out what you get from your present ISP. Orange offer free broadband for anyone who has or takes out a £30 per month contract. The contract is for 18 months. The package you get is the BB plus package which is worth £17.99 a month and comes with free wireless and talk, and upto 8 meg speed if your line can take it. Some ISP providers are telling you they can get much faster speeds than your lines can handle just to get you moving over. They also tell you that you get unlimited downloads and then tell you it is subject to a fair use policy. So in reality they are limited. So you need to ask the right questions before you make a change and do your sums.
The BB market is very competative at the moment so why not ring your present ISP and ask them for a better package. Tell them you are thinking about cancelling first.

Interesting She wouldn't be changing any ISP though, she doesnt have one as it stands... i think she miay just try and make do with free month trials for the duration of the summer...only 2 months left anyway now.. But thanks all for your advice...i'm sure it'll still be of use in some way
Orange Try BB Not the best, a standard USB modem, upto 1mb speed and 2 gb usage a month. BUT You can cancel it upto 30 days after activation (when line is made ready for bb) and you will get your £14.99 back. Sof its 2 months she's back for it can take 2 weeks to activate the thing in the first place then she gets a month for nowt. But please make sure you know when its activated and cancel after 25 days - if you call on the 31st you're stuck in the 12 month contract.
