Got a dell laptop which has a partioned hard drive C: and D: . The C: drive is almost full while the D: drive has almost 370GB . What can I do ? Can I alter the D: and give more to the C: Any help greatly received! Ta
keeping it ultra simple you can delete the pation of c and d drive and voila, one drive , loads of space.... failing that you can alter where downloaded programs/pictures/music etc are kept, its easier to google it and look on the windows forums than trying to explain!
Drive D is either your CD/DVD or a recovery partition. 370gb for a Dell recovery partition doesn't sound right. You sure it ain't 370Mb?
Drive d is where you should put all your installed programs in this case, and leave drive c for system stuff. This is a common configuration for windows servers, not often seen on desktops or laptops though. Your other option is to back up anything you have on drive d, or move it to c if you have room, then go into the partition manager, delete drive d and extend drive c into the free space.
Thanks Ade - I had read that somewhere but I was wondering if anyone knew another soloution. Cheers everyone
sorry if I'm telling you what you already know, but do a search on the drive....on Xp press search....All files and folders....look in C drive .....specify in size kb......and then put in 200000 or so,and see what it finds, sometimes there can be quite a few gig of stuff you don't need, just google it to make sure its safe to delete.
Because its windows and its stupid. Creates separate boot/system partitions, even though its all on the same HDD. You can merge, but unless you know what you're doing I wouldn't bother. Resizing the partitions is easy enough using Disk Management in control panel. YouTube it, there will be a video tutorial I'm sure Or buy a Mac
Re: where is the partition manager On windows 7 it's: Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management
get hold of a copy of something like partition magic which enables you to resize/create/delete partitions. Not sure about one of the email threads below telling you to "delete the partitions". as you have data in both and you cannot simply merge them. They are in effect two 'virtual drives' on a single 'physical drive'. It also depends what you use the PC for. The larger the virtual disk the longer it takes for file searches, Defrags etc etc. Think of it like merging several filing cabinets into one supersized drawer. It takes ages to find sort and file individual files etc. If you cant get 'partition magic. try looking on Tucows or somewhere like that to see if there is any freebie disk management software out there. Make sure your recovery data isnt on Drive D though before you start messing about. Personally I have a backup image of my Hard drives on a Buffalo external drive as I have lost to much in the past when a HDD fails. Even if you have backed up data it still takes a couple of days to reinstall apps and then all the security updates AV software virus signatures, downloaded stuff etc. etc. assuming you have all the install disks and legit software.
Clean some space with this http://www.hanselman.com/blog/GuideToFreeingUpDiskSpaceUnderWindows7.aspx And move your large files (videos, music etc etc) onto your D drive. Alternatively back everything up. Format the drive and reinstall it all onto one big partition.
