One question that leaps to mind is "why now?". I thought that it was pretty obvious that some Italian games were rigged. I remember a few years ago when AC Milan played Brescia with both sides needing a draw at their respective ends of the table. Milan knocked one in with about ten minutes left, and then allowed Brescia to run through virtually straight from the restart to equalise. Also, anyone who has read Joe McGinnis's superb "The Miracle of Castel di Sangro" cannot fail to recall the account of "el sistemo" during the final round of matches.
What's the difference? Have you read TMOCDS btw? Superb book will bring it over for you next week if you haven't. Money certainly changes hands.
difference is 2 sides agree to gentlemans agreement in this case only one side is agreeing to paying a ref . isn't that whats happening? yeah bring that book over - to get urban gorlla tickets : http://www.urban-gorilla.co.uk/html/index.html
RE: difference is 2 sides agree to gentlemans agreement Yeah, possibly. But both sides playing out a game that they both know is fixed, whether it be an "honourable draw" or fixed in favour of the team that needs the win, it still has repercussions for other teams, just not the opposition against whom the ref has been paid to make dubious decisions.
hmm there is a subtle difference though remember, i am cleverer than you so i think its best if we just agree that i'm right.
